New Arrivals

arcsI’ve received some new books lately which I’ve been meaning to tell you about. Some happen to be e-galleys and while I do enjoy receiving these I admit sometimes they aren’t as easy to read. I’ve noticed that the formatting on these can sometimes be really off. Anyway here’s what’s arrived:

A Long Way from Verona by Jane Gardam. Jessica has always known that her destiny would be shaped by her refusal to conform, her compulsion to tell the absolute truth, and her dedication to observing the strange wartime world that surrounds her.

Good Kings Bad Kings by Susan Nussbaum. I was excited to get this one as I had added it to my list earlier this year. This book received the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction.

The Deliverance of Evil by Roberto Costantini. A debut crime novel set in Rome and featuring Commissario Michele Balistreri.

For my Kindle I have:

The Yellow Eyes of Crocodiles by Katherine Pancol. From the publisher: a caffeinated, wildly comic, assuredly irresistible novel that revolves around Joséphine and Iris, two sisters in a charmingly discordant Parisian family.

Perfect by Rachel Joyce. From the publisher: Byron Hemmings wakes to a morning that looks like any other: his school uniform draped over his wooden desk chair, his sister arguing over the breakfast cereal, the click of his mother’s heels as she crosses the kitchen. But when the three of them leave home, driving into a dense summer fog, the morning takes an unmistakable turn.

Don’t all of these sound good? Now comes the hard part, which one to start. Let me know if you’ve read any of these and what you recommend!

Catching Up

Oh friends what a week we had. It started off with a trip to the ER for my husband, thankfully, he is doing great but that was nerve-wracking. Then the rest of the week was just taken over by lots of stress at work. So this was the weekend that couldn’t get here soon enough!

I’ve been spending a lot of downtime. Taking naps, drinking hot chocolate, doing a bit of reading and not much else. Our house is a mess and my studio, well I can barely see my two work tables but I’m happy I’ve spent time relaxing. I needed that. There’s still quite a bit of Sunday left so I may actually start doing some work around my studio.

Unfortunately I haven’t filled up my shop with any new journals this season and I won’t have the chance to finish any new journals to add to my shop until the new year. I do have a little sale going on in case you are in need of some journals though, just enter “Happy2013” in the coupon code for a little discount.

On the reading front, I did finish Snow White Must Die by Nele Neuhaus so I hope to have a little review here soon.  And, yesterday when we went to the bookstore I had to buy the latest RT Book Reviews magazine. There are several new to me mysteries mentioned and I am looking forward to reading more about those.

Anyway, I hope you’ve all been doing great and catch up with you soon!

Hello December

I hope you all had a great weekend. We enjoyed spending time with friends, doing a bit of shopping (Renegade Craft Fair) and sleeping in late. Unfortunately somehow I didn’t get a chance to do as much reading as I would have liked. I should be doing a wrap up post on German Literature Month but I’m still reading the four books books I started so I may be wrapping this up in another month – I hope so anyway!

November was the slowest reading month I’ve had all year. I only finished two books. Ah well, let’s see if I can read a bit more in December.

textilebooksLet me tell you though about my find at the craft fair. I stopped at the Little Red Leaves booth, which featured poetry chapbooks hand-sewn using recycled textiles. Isn’t that great? It took me a while to find a book but I ended up choosing Lucky by Mairéad Byrne.

The book with the bird is actually a blank book. It’s only 36 pages but it’s so cute. I looked on their website but I don’t find the blank books online. I love supporting other journal makers.

Now there are still a couple of hours left to the weekend so I’m going to close up here and try to get a bit more reading done. Next post I’ll try to fill you in on some of the ARCs that have arrived recently.
