This & That

thanksgivingHurrah, the weekend is here! It’s been a long few weeks at work and much more awaits in the next couple of weeks but no more thinking about work, it’s time to begin the weekend! We don’t have big Thanksgiving plans which is fine by me. We are going to visit with some friends for the afternoon and that’s about it.

I have lots of things I would like to accomplish this weekend like crafting, yoga and of course reading. I’m so very behind on my German reading. I’ve started four books and I really think I’ll be reading these four books well into December. I think I’ve mentioned all four books at one time or another but here is my list: The Blind Side Of the Heart by Julia Franck, The Dark Monk by Oliver Pötzsch, Snow White Must Die by Nele Neuhaus and In Times Of Fading Light by Eugen Ruge.

Last night I did end up adding a graphic novel to the mix and I went with Relish by Lucy Knisley. This may be the only book I finish in November. Yikes.

So lots of good stuff to look forward to. Oh and as much as I don’t enjoy going out shopping during the whole Black Friday chaos, I do have some bookstore coupons and I can’t let those go to waste. I wonder what goodies I’ll find! Anyway, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and if you celebrate Thanksgiving may it be a lovely time with your family.

Oops

pageswithenvelopeHad another fun evening at my altered books class. First, I glued tissue paper onto the book pages which you can’t tell here but it’s really cool because you can still see some of the original book text. On the right page I decided to attach a glassine envelope with some washi tape. I figured I could use the envelope to stash a little card or picture. Oh and have I told you I’m addicted to washi tape? More on that in another post.

Our instructor brought some of her rubber stamps with her and I love stamping but most of my stamps are small and she had this great, big funky stamp. I wanted to try it on the tissue paper. So as you can see, although I realize the picture is not that great, part of the image got lost. I don’t think I pressed hard enough and I get the feeling the book moved as I was pressing on it. It’s starting to lose some of its sturdiness as I’ve been cutting pages out.

Anyway, that image is supposed to be this one. Yeah, big oops! So now I can decide if I want to cover it up or maybe I just let it go. I think I’ may just add more stuff to the page around it so it’s not just a weird stamp in the middle. Who knows.

It is fun to play in this because I don’t mind if I make mistakes. Not so when I’m bookbinding! Anyway, just wanted to share.

Oh and I forgot to mention, if you ever want to try your hand at Altered Books I highly recommend it but just make sure you aren’t working on a book like this one!

Checking Out Books

So I’ve mentioned that lately I feel like I’ve been reading the same books and making very little progress, and then I thought why not add some graphic novels to the mix. Certainly I’ll be able to finish a book or two sooner rather than later right? Well that wasn’t the only reason for adding some graphic novels to my list. I realized that I haven’t read any this year and I wanted to see if I could remedy that.

librarybooksThe first book is Relish: My Life in the Kitchen by Lucy Knisley. I loved her book French Milk and I’ve read good reviews of this one from some of you so I thought this would be a good choice.

The other graphic novel I had on hold is Julio’s Day by Gilbert Hernandez. This is the story of one man’s life from his birth in 1900 to his death in 2000. I have high expectations of this one.

And, before I left the library I took a quick peek at the new books shelf and In Times of Fading Light by Eugen Ruge caught my eye. How perfect that it’s another German book to add to my German Literature month reads. This is a generational saga from an East German perspective on half a century of history. I started this one last night.

So how about you? What have you checked out from the library?
