Book Buys

I hope you all had a lovely weekend. We went to a new coffee shop and had some delicious iced drinks. It would have been great if they’d had a nice outdoor seating area but maybe our next coffee shop to visit will have one. Clearly I’m trying to recreate our Germany cafe visits! haha.

I also dropped off some books at one of the Little Free Libraries in my neighborhood and I promise I didn’t get any books. That’s not to say I haven’t added more books to my TBR stacks.

Let me tell you about the book buys I made at the end of May. These are all Kindle reads:

Dominicana by Angie Cruz
Welcome to Lagos by Chibundu Onuzo
Cold Caller by Jason Starr (had to get this after Diane’s recent review).
All Systems Red by Martha Wells (had to get this after Jenclair’s recent review)
Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn
A Guide to Birds of East Africa by Nicholas Drayson
Las Dos Muertes by Jaime Alfonso Sandoval
How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House by Cheri Jones
Mum & Dad by Joanna Trollope

Oh and this weekend I received the Amazon Reading Guide Summer 2021. This magazine features author interviews with Amanda Gorman and Kristin Hannah among others. There are book recommendations by genre and even a feature on what defines a beach read with input from various authors. I think I’ve heard of most of the books mentioned but still anything to promote books makes me happy.

Alright I hope you all have a great start of the week and more book talk soon!

On My Nightstand

I think I’m off to a great start with 20 Books for Summer (in my case 10 Books). Several of you recommended The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, translated by Alan R. Clarke, and that’s the book I decided to kick off my summer reading. This fable is about a young shepherd boy who decides to follow his dreams to see the pyramids in Egypt but there are some missteps and adventures along the way.

I’m really enjoying this. I know it may not be for everyone but it’s light and fun and I feel like I’m falling under the spell of waiting to see what treasure he will discover. Here’s a sentence I really liked:

“Making a decision was only the beginning of things. When someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he had never dreamed of when he first made the decision.”

And, isn’t my copy pretty? I believe this is a 10th Anniversary edition.

The other book I’m reading is Mouthful of Birds by Samantha Schweblin, translated by Megan McDowell. According to the book description this collection of stories features women on the edge, men turned upside down and the natural world at odds with reality. I expected this to be similar to The Houseguest by Amparo Davila, translated by Matthew Gleeson, which I read earlier this year and loved but unlike The Houseguest I feel like some of these stories are too short and I’m left wanting a bit more closure. There have been a couple which are outstanding and I’m about halfway through so I’m hoping the rest of the stories are going to blow me away.

Finally, my last read is The Lurkers by Sandi Tan. From the description: The residents of Santa Claus Lane do their best to stay out of each other’s way, but desire, fury and mischief too often propel these suburban neighbors to collide. Precocious Korean American sisters Mira and Rosemary find their world rocked by a suicide, and they must fight to keep their home. This sounds like it has a lot of possibilities right?

I think this started off with a good story but it’s failing to meet my expectations. I don’t like any of the characters and find them all almost too bizarre. I love quirky characters but in this story you do feel like you are lurking about finding things you’d rather not find about the people in your neighborhood.

Anyway, these are my current reads and hope to finish at least one book this weekend and move on to some new stories. What about you, have you already started your 20 Books for Summer if you participating or any other summer reading projects?

Venturing Out

This week hasn’t been like the vacations we normally take but we are finally venturing out a bit more now that we are vaccinated and had some extra days off this week. It feels so nice to be out again but it’s funny because we almost feel like we are tourists in our own city again. We headed downtown for a bit of a wander and I know there is always some new building going up but given that we haven’t been downtown in a year, we can really see some of the changes.

We walked around the Seaholm District taking pictures of some art installations, taking note of restaurants we want to try later and enjoying some of the nature nearby like the Shoal Creek Trail. We’ve gone biking on that trail before but I think they’ve built out even more parts of it so we’ll have to do that again one of these days.

Finally, it was 10 a.m. and time to go to our destination, the Central Library. It’s been more than a year since I’ve been to the library and it felt so good to visit. I typically go to a branch closer to my house but as we were downtown we had to visit this one. Our first stop was at the CookBook Bar & Cafe to get some coffee and treats which we took to the sixth floor of the library which is the rooftop garden area. I had a book with me so I enjoyed reading and hanging out at such a great place.

Believe it or not, I didn’t borrow any books but my goal was to find out what was wrong with my library card account as I couldn’t renew it online several weeks ago when I tried. The staff were super helpful and it was a quick fix and I can now download audiobooks again! Which will come in handy once I start transitioning back to working in the office in the coming weeks and I need a book for my commute.

It was a wonderful morning and I’m looking forward to another visit soon. I have one more day off so let’s see what I get up to tomorrow. How about you, have you started venturing out more?
