For the Wishlist

I feel like I haven’t started reading a new book in a long time but tonight I’m starting Consequences of Sin. I am in the mood for some lighter fare and this one seems to fit the bill, plus it’s due back at the library this weekend.

Even though I’m excited to start this book and have countless others calling my name, I can’t help but get excited over a few other books I noted in the latest BookPage issue. Here are the ones I’m adding to my wishlist:

  • Angelica by Arthur Phillips. Set in Victorian England, Phillips’s impressive third novel uses four linked viewpoints to explore class, gender, family dynamics, sexuality and sciences both real and fraudulent, ancient and newly minted. Plus, there is a character that is described as part spiritualist, part psychologist. I like the sound of this one.
  • Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolaño. Described as a kaleidoscopic narrative about a group of young literary desperados who all but stake their lives on the imperative of poetry. How can I resist this one?
  • The Book of Air and Shadows by Michael Gruber. A comic thriller about a quest for an un-known, unpublished and hidden play by William Shakespeare. This sounds kind of fun.
  • The Color of a Dog Running Away by Richard Gwyn. A love story, a tale of adventure, a historical thriller, and an evocative tour of Barcelona. I love Barcelona so I’d love to revisit it even if it’s only via a novel.

What books are you looking forward to this Spring? C’mon, tell me, you know I want to add more to my list.

More New Books

You know, I had really thought about making April my no book buying month (I want to make a dent in my unread stacks), but I had that little coupon from Half Price Books burning a hole in my purse. So on the first of the month I promptly broke my little ban on no book buying.

At least it wasn’t a big book buying extravaganza. I came away with On Beauty by Zadie Smith and Abundance by Sena Jeter Naslund. Over the weekend some BookMooches also arrived, Wish by Melina Gerosa Bellows and Mail by Mameve Medwed. And, I also received the sweetest bookmarks from Tanabata. So cute and already in use!

Anyway, I’m afraid to update my Bookpedia file but I think I need to tackle that project this weekend. And, well as I already gave in and bought books in April there’s no sense in stopping the rest of this month right? I might as well as enjoy the book bargains, mooches, etc. Maybe May will be my no book buying month. Heh.

This & That

Despite having read a good number of books last month, I’ve fallen behind on some of the reading I wanted to get done. I still haven’t read Lady Susan for the Slaves discussion.

I know some of you are already reading your first book for the Once Upon a Time Challenge and some of you have even finished one book. Let me just say that I haven’t even started my Chunkster Challenge. Yikes.

Tuesday I have a book group meeting and I’m not done yet with The Dancing Girls of Lahore. What a sad book, perhaps that’s why it’s taking me a while to get through it. I will finish it but maybe not in time for the meeting.

In the meantime there are things around the web that are keeping me occupied. The latest Estella’s Revenge is out and it’s another great edition. Thank you again to Andi for the advance reader’s copy of the Barbara Seranella book and for posting my review.

My friend Isabel has decided to start a new reading challenge. It’s quite interesting so check it out, and best of all, it’s not as demanding as some of the others in the blogosphere.

Okay, I’m feeling slightly overwhelmed by all the books demanding my attention. Anyone else? I think I am in need of some brain candy. I’m off to stare at my bookshelves and find some light reading.
