I feel like I haven’t started reading a new book in a long time but tonight I’m starting Consequences of Sin. I am in the mood for some lighter fare and this one seems to fit the bill, plus it’s due back at the library this weekend.
Even though I’m excited to start this book and have countless others calling my name, I can’t help but get excited over a few other books I noted in the latest BookPage issue. Here are the ones I’m adding to my wishlist:
- Angelica by Arthur Phillips. Set in Victorian England, Phillips’s impressive third novel uses four linked viewpoints to explore class, gender, family dynamics, sexuality and sciences both real and fraudulent, ancient and newly minted. Plus, there is a character that is described as part spiritualist, part psychologist. I like the sound of this one.
- Savage Detectives by Roberto BolaΓΒ±o. Described as a kaleidoscopic narrative about a group of young literary desperados who all but stake their lives on the imperative of poetry. How can I resist this one?
- The Book of Air and Shadows by Michael Gruber. A comic thriller about a quest for an un-known, unpublished and hidden play by William Shakespeare. This sounds kind of fun.
- The Color of a Dog Running Away by Richard Gwyn. A love story, a tale of adventure, a historical thriller, and an evocative tour of Barcelona. I love Barcelona so I’d love to revisit it even if it’s only via a novel.
What books are you looking forward to this Spring? C’mon, tell me, you know I want to add more to my list.

Looks like a good list. I can’t wait to get into “The Rule of Four” I don’t even really know what it’s about but I liked the first page!
Oh, all of these sound good!
Oooh, those all sound good. Especially Savage Detectives. I feel an itchy Amazon ordering finger coming on.
Cloud Atlas is waiting for me!
Sounds like a lot of fun, what you have planned.
Enjoy your three day holiday.
Nik – I’ve heard some mixed reviews on Rule of Four. Hope you enjoy it and I’ll be looking for your review on it.
Jenclair – They do don’t they? π
Andi – I haven’t ordered anything from Amazon in a while and I’m feeling the need too!
Isabel – What 3 day holiday girl? I work in Corporate America there’s no such thing. ha,ha. Enjoy your trip!
“Book of Air and Shadows” sounds so interesting – then I realise I know Michael Gruber. His earlier supernatural thriller, “Tropic of Night” was really good – a good mix of character development and plot. I didn’t realise he had a new book coming this year. Thanks for the buzz. I’m going to try to check out the library for this one later.
I’m about two-thirds through Color of a Dog Running Away right now. Am really enjoying it Γ’β¬β it has a very dreamy quality to it. I’ve never been to Barcelona, but from the book I’m getting a look of its underside.
I’m also very curious about the Bolano.
Savage Detectives — gotta love the title!
Just read a review of Savage Detectives in Bookforum and I want to read it too. It sounds so good!
Dark Orpheus – Oh cool, you’ve already read one of his books and liked it. I don’t read many thrillers so it’s good to hear when a good one is out there.
Isabella – I’m curious about Bolano too. I read that his a famous Chilean writer but I’ve not come across any of his works before.
LK – I know! I think I would pick it up based on the title alone π
Stefanie – I need to look for my Bookforum… I don’t remember seeing that!
I also found a few books in BookPages that I need to go and request online. It’s such a vicious circle! Too many to read!
There’s a few books I’ve ordered that I’m eagerly waiting for. 3 that stand out are :
1. Blind Justice (Bruce Alexander) – Falsely charged of theft in 1768 London, thirteen-year-old Jeremy Proctor finds his only hope in Sir John Fielding, the founder of the Bow Street Runners police force, who recruits young Jeremy in his mission to fight crime.
2. Point of Honour (Madeline E. Robins) – In an alternative Regency London, young Sarah Tolerance, shunned for her tarnished reputation, invents a new identity for herself as an investigator and is hired to reclaim a mysterious antique fan, a case that causes her to question if her client is whohe claims to be.
3. The Cater Street Hangman (Anne Perry) – Careless of both murder and manners, Charlotte Ellison and her sister, two determinedly unconventional young women, ignore Victorian mores and actively join the police investigation, led by young Inspector Thomas Pitt, into the murder of their servant girl.
hmm .. I hope my post was not too long ..
Danielle – Vicious circle indeed! I love BookPages they always have such interesting selections. A bit for everyone π
Gavin – I hadn’t heard of the Bruce Alexander or Madeline Robins books. I am going to search for those as they sound just like my cup of tea. Unfortunately I didn’t like the Anne Perry series much. I read three of those and just never warmed up to the characters. They seem to be hugely popular though. Hope you get your books soon π
