The Year So Far…

Everyone has been doing their year in review stats and that’s always so fun to see so I thought join in. Here’s what my reading stats are so far:

Books read: 48
Mysteries: 12
Fiction: 26
Books by women: 34
Library copies: 10
In translation: 5

The biggest surprise from this so far is the number of mysteries. Typically that would be about even with the fiction but I’ve been trying to add more non-fiction, graphic novels, YA books and others so in a way it is nice to have a greater variety of genres.

I’m participating in six challenges and I had started off doing so well but what with my move things just kind of slowed down. The one challenge I have been keeping up is the First in a Series challenge, it’s probably easiest for me to keep up with that one as I read so many mysteries and I’m always trying to discover a new series.

I did read What Angels Fear (May) and Silent in the Grave (June) but just never got around to posting about them. I enjoyed them so much that I have the sequels to these just waiting for me. I promise to post on the series book I read for this month but will post about it after I go to my book group meeting next week.

I’m not giving up on my challenges yet but I’m just having fun. If I finish them, great and if not, well those books will still remain on my TBR list. As for the rest of the year, I hope to keep up with reading group reads (check out the latest Slaves of Golconda choice) and hopefully keep up with ARCs while not forgetting my shelf sitters.

Easy, Breezy Books

It’s summer and everyone is coming up with their summer books list. Bookmarks Magazine, NPR, even Poets & Writers magazine is sporting a rather summery look this month.

lovehampton I’ve read one book recently that would be a perfect addition for those of you wanting a good beach read. LoveHampton by Sherri Rifkin came to me as an ARC and while it is more along the lines of chick lit, it is a fun read and one I’d recommend if you are in the mood for something light. Want to know more, here’s my review.

I have a few more books that look like they’ll be enjoyable reads so I’ll have to throw these into my mix of books. Here are the others:

  • Dedication by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus. From the book jacket — “What if your ex was adored by millions and you had only one chance to make him regret his entire existence?”
  • Free Style by Linda Nieves-Powell. This is a story about two thirtysomething married moms who decide to escape their to-do lists and revisit their past.
  • How to be Single by Liz Tuccillo. From the book jacket — “It’s the most annoying question and they just can’t help asking you. Why are you single?”

Now I just wish I was on the beach with these books in my bag and a frozen drink in my hand.

Weekly Geeks

I’ve been meaning to join Dewey and the rest of the Weekly Geeks but something or another has kept me from participating. But this week I couldn’t resist as the theme is on magazines and I love magazines and subscribe to too many of them. So here goes my first Weekly Geek posting with the prompt from Dewey…

This week’s Weekly Geeks theme is to talk about the magazines we read. In order to get you started, I prepared a little magazines meme, but feel free to take it further if you want. I also think it’d be great if you displayed images of the covers of your favorite magazines.

For each magazine you want to talk about, here are a few questions. Answer as many or as few as you want.

  • Name of magazine. Bound & Lettered. This is one of my favorite magazines. It is the magazine for bookbinders and calligraphers. I only wish it was published more often.
B&L
  • Do you subscribe or just buy it now and then? I have been subscribing to it for about three years now.
  • What’s your favorite regular feature in the magazine? The pictures are wonderful and I enjoy the articles but my guilty pleasure are the ads. Yes, the ads. I love to read about workshops and new books.
  • What do you think your interest in this magazine says about you? That I’m a bit of a bookbinder.
  • How long have you been reading this magazine? Hmm, about four or five years I think.
  • Is there any unique or quirky aspect to the magazine that keeps you reading? I’m just happy there is something that celebrates paper arts.

Here’s a visual of other magazines I never miss. No wonder, I’m behind on my books. This is a lot of magazine reading huh? Plus, I’m always picking up whatever else catches my attention.
