I’ve been meaning to join Dewey and the rest of the Weekly Geeks but something or another has kept me from participating. But this week I couldn’t resist as the theme is on magazines and I love magazines and subscribe to too many of them. So here goes my first Weekly Geek posting with the prompt from Dewey…
This week’s Weekly Geeks theme is to talk about the magazines we read. In order to get you started, I prepared a little magazines meme, but feel free to take it further if you want. I also think it’d be great if you displayed images of the covers of your favorite magazines.
For each magazine you want to talk about, here are a few questions. Answer as many or as few as you want.
- Name of magazine. Bound & Lettered. This is one of my favorite magazines. It is the magazine for bookbinders and calligraphers. I only wish it was published more often.
- Do you subscribe or just buy it now and then? I have been subscribing to it for about three years now.
- What’s your favorite regular feature in the magazine? The pictures are wonderful and I enjoy the articles but my guilty pleasure are the ads. Yes, the ads. I love to read about workshops and new books.
- What do you think your interest in this magazine says about you? That I’m a bit of a bookbinder.
- How long have you been reading this magazine? Hmm, about four or five years I think.
- Is there any unique or quirky aspect to the magazine that keeps you reading? I’m just happy there is something that celebrates paper arts.
Here’s a visual of other magazines I never miss. No wonder, I’m behind on my books. This is a lot of magazine reading huh? Plus, I’m always picking up whatever else catches my attention.
What a great varieties of magazines you read, Iliana! I might consider subscribing to Bookmarks since there’re so many bookbloggers mentioning about this mag. And the Mystery Scene looks good too! 🙂
Hi Iliana – glad to see others read so many magazines too! I don’t subscribe to anything, but I magazines often grab my attention and I have trouble resisting buying them!
I have to be really disciplined where magazines are concerned otherwise all my spare money (and a lot that really isn’t spare as well) would go on it. I’m particularly bad about anything to do with books (What a surprise!) and any of the classical music magazines, but pretty much anything will do if I’m not careful.
This is a great idea for a meme and I will have to go over to Dewey later.
Great selection of magazines! I definitely have my mag addictions to post about now… 😉
Yay! Another Bust reader! I also love Utne and Bitch, but they’ve become REALLY hard to find around here. I live in a smallish town with a bunch of smallish towns around it, and I have yet to dash off to Dallas every time I want to read Bitch. I should just give it up and subscribe. lol
I go through phases with magazines. Right now I only get a couple regularly but even those have been piling up. This week’s weekly geeks theme though is making me want to subscribe to more of them!
I visited the book binding magazine page – fascinating! And I requested one of their catalogs. I find it amazing how there are so many magazines for almost every interest. Thanks for sharing!
Sometimes, I get in a magazine mood and forget about books.
Right now, I am in a book mood. My magazines are piling up!
I love, love, love “Bust”!
That sounds like a great magazine. I tend to pick up books rather than magazines these days, so I’ve let most of the subscriptions run out. Also I find that I want to keep all my art or stitching magazines and there is the question of where to store them. Do you save yours, or recycle?
Melody – Bookmarks is good.. Not great, I sort of liked Pages better but I feel like I have to support this one too 🙂
joanna – At one point I had 10 subscriptions but I’ve been culling them down. Of course then I go buy the magazine and that’s when I think I should just subscribe again it’s cheaper 🙂
Ann – I know, it’s so easy to get carried away by a new issue right? It does help somewhat when the magazines aren’t monthly but still. It gets expensive.
Christine – I thought about you when I saw the meme. I know you love magazines! I hope you do it so I can see what new glossies you are reading 🙂
Andi – See, at BookPeople they always have Bitch, Bust and Utne 🙂 I love those. They make me feel all empowered!
tanabata – There were some that I had which were piling up a lot so I’ve let those go. I hate to read old issues so with these I’ve managed to keep up.
Wendy – The catalog is dangerous — you’ll want everything! ha,ha… My husband is a calligrapher and I’m a bookbinder so needless to say when the catalog comes in the mail we fight for it and dream about spending all of our money away 🙂
Isabel – I know what you mean. What magazines are you reading now? You should play along with this so I can see what you are reading!
Marinka – Isn’t it the best? Venuzine is another good one that I sometimes forget about.
Danielle – I do save these but you are right it is such a space problem. I keep the Mystery Scene and Bookmarks. I’ve stopped subscribing to Somerset Studio but I have all of those. Anything else I recycle or donate to the library. I need more space!
Bound & Lettered looks fabulous! I need another magazine subscription like I need a hole in the head, but I’m going to check it out anyway. 🙂
I love Bitch and Bust as well….I need to do a better job remembering about Bust. You have a great variety!
In another blog I have commented how I have cut down my magazine reading to make time for books. But I do enjoy the lighter reading that magazines have to offer. I still read Bookmarks but I usually read the copy at the library on campus. I browse Details and Cargo when I’m at the hair salon! 🙂
Ah, nice to see that I am not alone in my magazine habit! I try to cut down but every time I stop subscribing to one I find another one I like ;). I really love the collage you created of your favorites.
Julie – It’s a great magazine.. a bit expensive but I think it’s worth it! I know what you mean about not needing any more subscriptions though 🙂
Kristen – I love those two… I’ve been reading them for years and can’t imagine stopping.
Matt – Oh at the hair salon I do read other things like Marie Claire or “gasp” Lucky, the magazine for shopping! ha,ha..
Greer – Me too! I can’t help it, there are so many good ones right.
I subscribe to a load of magazines. I should take a picture of them all sometime, but I think I’d shock even myself. Many of them are about cooking.
Look how many magazines we have in common! Twins! And even though I didn’t mention Bust, I have read it, mostly when a friend who subscribes was my housemate. I should probably subscribe!
