Making A Potion

I’m working on a new little book this week for which I’m planning to use some library pockets (actually I’ve made these before but it’s been a while). Anyway, as I’m not planning to decorate these I thought the pockets looked a bit plain so I decided to make some walnut ink to stain them.

Doesn’t it look like I’m brewing some awful potion? It came out pretty dark but I can dilute it as I work with it.

This is about as much “cooking” that actually gets done in our house. Ha,ha…

Anyway, speaking of potions I’m still reading Behold, Here’s Poison by Georgette Heyer. Things are heating up in this mystery now that the general has died and all the family is being investigated for having done him in by poisoning. There are lots of potential murderers and I still haven’t quite decided who I think did it.

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll have some reviews for you on books that are out of this world.

B&N Finds

No, I didn’t make any purchases at Barnes & Noble over the weekend but I did find some books to add to my wish list. I’ve got a birthday coming up so I hope my husband takes note. heh.

The first book I was excited to see was the latest novel by Luis Alberto Urrea, Into the Beautiful North. I loved his book The Hummingbird’s Daughter which I read a couple of years ago, so I can’t wait to see what this wonderful storyteller has in store for us now. I also saw the new psychological thriller by Gillian Flynn, Dark Places. I was so tempted to get this one too. I read her award-winning novel, Sharp Objects earlier this year and thought it was quite an original thriller.

When I took a peek at the Craft section I took note of several new books on collage and mixed media works. I really like a lot of these but lately I feel like I keep seeing the same type of work. It’s lovely but I can’t help but wish for more variety. And, I think I found it in Creative Paint Workshop for Mixed-Media Artists by Ann Baldwin. It looks like it has a bit of everything with lots of great pictures and what seem to be easy to follow instructions. I don’t know how much longer I can hold off from buying this one.

Finally before we left I noticed the new Discover Great New Writers newsletter so I grabbed it and as I’ve been reading through it today I’ve already added more books to the list. Sigh.

Anyway, this week I’m participating in another Book Blog tour, I hope to have some reviews and of course update you on some of the books I’ve been reading. I’ve had some good surprises so that’s always a good thing.

Now The Weekend

While I was out running errands today I stopped by at Half Price Books because Sandy has recently been giving me lots of suggestions on new mysteries to try. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any of the books I was looking for, but I found out that next weekend HPB has a big sale so I didn’t linger around too long and will be back then and with a big bag. heh.

It was still a day of books though because when I got the mail today I had two books that Les sent me. The Travelling Hornplayer by Barbara Trapido and The Musician’s Daughter by Susanne Dunlap. They both sound wonderful and wasn’t that totally sweet of Les?

What else? Oh yes, I have a few of links for you to check out. For those of you who are fans of Gabriel García Márquez did you see the recent Borzoi Reader? A new biography of the master of magical realism is out this month and you can check the sneak preview as well as 25 intriguing facts about GGM.

For those of you who enjoyed my review of The Last Queen by C.W. Gortner and are interested in the book, stop by Serena’s blog for a chance to win a copy!

Now for those of you who collect bookmarks, isn’t this liquid bookmark cool? I could totally see myself using the red one for one of my whodunit books.

Anyway, I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. I’ve got lots of housework and other random chores to take care of this weekend but reading will get done somehow.
