No, I didn’t make any purchases at Barnes & Noble over the weekend but I did find some books to add to my wish list. I’ve got a birthday coming up so I hope my husband takes note. heh.
The first book I was excited to see was the latest novel by Luis Alberto Urrea, Into the Beautiful North. I loved his book The Hummingbird’s Daughter which I read a couple of years ago, so I can’t wait to see what this wonderful storyteller has in store for us now. I also saw the new psychological thriller by Gillian Flynn, Dark Places. I was so tempted to get this one too. I read her award-winning novel, Sharp Objects earlier this year and thought it was quite an original thriller.
When I took a peek at the Craft section I took note of several new books on collage and mixed media works. I really like a lot of these but lately I feel like I keep seeing the same type of work. It’s lovely but I can’t help but wish for more variety. And, I think I found it in Creative Paint Workshop for Mixed-Media Artists by Ann Baldwin. It looks like it has a bit of everything with lots of great pictures and what seem to be easy to follow instructions. I don’t know how much longer I can hold off from buying this one.
Finally before we left I noticed the new Discover Great New Writers newsletter so I grabbed it and as I’ve been reading through it today I’ve already added more books to the list. Sigh.
Anyway, this week I’m participating in another Book Blog tour, I hope to have some reviews and of course update you on some of the books I’ve been reading. I’ve had some good surprises so that’s always a good thing.
I always find it difficult to add to my wish list even around my birthday time instead of running out and picking up the books for myself. I so rarely get the books on my wish list as gifts as it is. maybe that’s why.
Urrea is an author I am really looking forward to reading. I met him at the book festival last month and developed an instant crush on him. 😉
I hope you are doing well, Iliana. I’m looking forward to your review of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. My tour stop is scheduled for Tuesday. For once, I’m actually all ready. Enjoy your week!
I can’t wait to read your review on Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Iliana! I hope you have a great weekend! 🙂
I’ve heard great things Luis Alberto Urrea. I hope you get all those books and many more for your birthday 😀
I have The Hummingbird’s Daughter in my TBR pile. His latest got a nice review in The Dallas Morning News yesterday. Have a great week!
It’s a good thing I’m able to keep my bookblogging separate from going to the bookstore. I only try to go with my memory and not bring a list or else I would bring home more books than I can carry. I like the sense of adventure and challenge to see if I can step foot in a bookstore and only come home with one or two. I had to chuckle at your comment ‘I don’t know how long I can hold off’! so cute. Happy Birthday early!
That’s so exciting about Urrea! I just read The Hummingbird’s Daughter a couple months ago and loved it. 😀
Literary Feline – I don’t usually get books for birthdays or christmas either. I think my family is afraid they’ll get me something I already have! haha… Although I think this past year I have received a few more than usual. And, yay for the tour stop. I can’t wait to see what you thought of the book. I am surprised I’m ready too – haha. I got to meet Luis Alberto at book festival several years ago – so nice isn’t he. Have a great week! 🙂
Melody – It was a good story. I really want to read what everyone else thought too 🙂 Hope you enjoyed your blog break by the way. I need to visit and read about it!
Nymeth – Ooh, I hope the birthday fairies are listening to you 🙂
Kristy – I must look back on the DMN to search for that. I was so disappointed when they did away practically with their book section. I guess that’s the norm nowadays though.
Care – Thank you! 🙂 I usually don’t take a wish list with me to the bookstore either unless it’s Half Price Books, then I’ve got my list with me and I’m ready to go crazy! haha…
Eva – Wasn’t it such a great book? I find it interesting that his main character in this one is also a young girl. Definitely looking forward to it! 🙂
I didn’t know Urrea has a new book out?! I didn’t see it at the bookstore…Borders needs to catch up with B&N. lol
I finished The 19th Wife over the weekend and wrote a review for TLC Book Tour, and started Half of a Yellow Sun. Then I stopped by the bookstore and grabbed her other book, Purple Hisbiscus.
Gasp! You went to a bookstore and didn’t buy anything? Hopefully your husband takes note of your list for your birthday 🙂
I didn’t realize Dark Places was out already…can’t wait to read that one! I always grab their Discover New Writers flyer and find some good books in it!!
So weird that you mention Urrea, because I just “discovered” him by accident, following links on Twitter. Immediately knew I needed to put INTO THE BEAUTIFUL NORTH on my TBR list. BTW, send him a DM on Twitter or email him via his website (http://www.luisurrea.com) with your mailing address, and he’ll send you some book-related merchandise!
Looking forward to your tour.
It’s fun to read them.
I really enjoyed The Hummingbirds Daughter so I am definitely planning on getting his new one as well.
Into the Beautiful North does sound good. I hope you get some nice reads for your birthday. I wish mine was coming up!
I’m really looking forward to your tour post!
Matt – What’s going on with Borders falling behind! 🙂 I can’t wait to read your review of the 19th Wife. I need to hurry up and start that book too as I’m joining in the blog tour as well. Oh and I hope you love Purple Hibiscus. I thought both of her books were wonderful.
Stefanie – I know! I think it’s because I’m hoping I’ll have some prezzies soon 🙂
Staci – I know you can read the Discover newsletter online but I love having it in my hot little hands 🙂
Mindy Withrow – Ooh, thank you so much for the tip! I’m definitely going to visit his web site. I just loved Hummingbird’s Daughter so I can’t imagine that this new novel will disappoint!
Isabel – It is isn’t it? Have you done any virtual tours yet? You should 🙂
Marg – Wasn’t it a great book? I can’t wait for this one!
Rebecca – I hope I do too 🙂
Anna – I still need to write my review. As usual I wait around until the last minute 🙂
Into the Beautiful North sounds so good.
Keep that wish list growing! My husband is good with a list, but I’m always disappointed if there’s not some SURPRISE in the gift stack!
I hadn’t known about Hummingbird’s Daughter, but I do have INTO THE BEAUTIFUL NORTH to look forward to. I hope it shows up for your birthday!
Move here. lol The bookstore here is so bad that I can go in planning to buy something and walk out with nothing! I am soo excited, though, I think they are building a huge bookstore an hour from here. Not exactly next door, but close enough!
