Linky

A short post tonight guys because I’ve had a long week and I’m ready to go get in bed with my book and relax. I’m hoping this weekend there will just be a lot of lounging around with books. Doesn’t that sound like a good plan?

Here are a few links to check out:

  • The Slaves of Golconda are choosing the next read. Danielle has come up with some great choices so join us. I’ve not been the best of slaves this year as I’ve struggled with most of the books we’ve read but I still hope to turn things around. And, I’ll say it again, every year one of Slaves choices always ends up on my favorite reads of the year. We really do read some great stuff.
  • Want some free eBooks? I don’t have an eReader so I can’t say how good this place is but it’s free stuff so check out ManyBooks.
  • Indulge in some gorgeous artwork over at The Beauty of Paper. I especially love the Typography one.
  • Don’t know what to read? VenusZine has the Ultimate Summer Reading Guide, Part I and II. The top 10 authors, classics, you name it.

Hope you’ll enjoy those links and have a fabulous weekend!

On Mysteries

As my previous post was about thrillers I figured it would be great to follow it up with some tidbits on mysteries. I was reading the latest Mystery Scene on the weekend and there was an article about author Carolyn White (must read her books) and she said this regarding mysteries:

“The wonderful thing about mysteries is that people who read them want the world to be a good place. They would never pick up a mystery if they didn’t care about justice.”

I love that. That is definitely one of the reasons I read mysteries. I guess the other for me would be that as I tend to read a lot of series basically it’s a way for me to revisit with characters I like. I enjoy seeing characters develop, relationships get more complex, and so on.

So anyway, you know I added some books to my wishlist after reading the magazine. Here are some new to me mysteries. If you’ve read some let me know.

  • The Magician’s Accomplice by Michael Genelin. This is one of a series set in Slovakia. Now that would definitely be a new crime destination for me so I really want to check it out.
  • Never Wave Goodbye by Doug Magee. This is more of a thriller but it has a great set up.
  • The Book of Spies by Gayle Lynds. Spy thrillers are not really my faves but this one has a rare book expert as the main character and if there are books and libraries involved then I’m willing to give it a whirl.
  • The Bohemian Girl by Kenneth Cameron. Set at the turn of the 20th Century in London. I think that’s enough for me to pay attention.
  • The Young Widow by Cassandra Chan. The series is a contemporary homage to Dorothy L. Sayers Wimsey series. Sounds interesting doesn’t it?

And that’s not all, here are two links to get more mystery news: Criminal Element and Rendezvous Crime.

Are you reading a good mystery right now? I’m still working through The Last Child by John Hart. I am about half way and feel as if I should know what the end will be but can’t put it all together yet.

Book Lists

Who doesn’t love to look at a book list and see how many books from the list you’ve read? I can’t pass up a good book list and I missed a recent one that NPR put together but luckily J.C. Montgomery blogged about it so I also had to add in my two cents.

The list is the Top 100 Killer Thrillers as selected by NPR audience. I may read a lot of mysteries but I don’t read as many thrillers so want to know how many I read from the list? 17. I was very happy to see Tana French, Stieg Larsson, Daphne Du Maurier and Wilkie Collins on the list.

There are a lot of authors I’ve been meaning to try such as Lee Child, Dennis Lehane, Michael Connelly, and others but you know how it is.

I was thinking if I could add a great thriller to the list, I would add Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. Anyway, what I’d love to know is if your favorite thriller made it on the list. If not, tell me and I’ll add it to mine.
