Checking In…

I didn’t plan that little blog break but I’ve just been so busy and have needed a bit of downtime. Of course I’m counting the days because soon the busy-ness will be over and I’ll be enjoying vacation. I just have to hang in there a bit more.

I have been reading of course but just not as much. I did finish the wonderful Rules Of Civility by Amor Towles and will tell you more about it soon. Then I wanted to read comfort book and was about to open a mystery but somehow I ended up with Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by Helen Simonson and it was a good choice indeed.

What else am I thinking about lately? Well, the fact that even though my Kindle is pretty well stocked up for my trip I don’t think I’ll just rely on that. I won’t be packing too many books but I must take some just in case.

Alright, off to rest up before another long day tomorrow.

Some New Books

I’ve just received two ARCs in the mail that sound very good. One is Darkness, My Old Friend by Lisa Unger. A thriller with several characters facing difficult situations and a place called The Hollows. Sounds creepy right?

The other one is Just My Type by Simon Garfield and it’s a book about fonts. I don’t know that I would have been as intrigued by this book years ago but given that my husband has studied graphic design and calligraphy, I’ve learned a few things myself and find typography quite interesting. I mean, I even saw Helvetica and think it was a fantastic indie film.  So this is a book that I may have to keep away from my husband’s shelves until I read it.

Other than that I’ve decided to make a couple of Georgette Heyer book purchases and I’ve added The Black Moth, Sylvester, Venetia and Frederica to my Kindle. Who knows, I may even buy a few more while the eBook deal is going on.

So these are my lastest acquisitions. I have a couple of other books I may buy for my Kindle soon to have ready for my vacation reading but I haven’t quite decided yet so I’ll keep you posted.

A Bit Mysterious

I just got back from my mystery book group meeting where we discussed In the Woods by Tana French. I was expecting that this one would be a crowd pleaser but it was actually not. Perhaps even one of the most disappointing reads for most of the members.

I didn’t re-read it for the discussion but I do know that I loved this book when I read it several years ago, you can see my review here. It was still an entertaining discussion, even if I had to struggle to remember a lot of the details of the book.

Moving on, our September read is Bruno, Chief of Police by Martin Walker. After that we’ll be reading: Man From Beijing by Henning Mankell, Sister by Rosamund Lupton and Deceit by Brandilyn Collins. I’m glad that the Mankell book is a stand-alone as I’ve only read a couple of his Wallander books and would hate to read out of order.

Anyway, all this talk of mysteries though is making me want to start reading one but I’ve been reading one book at a time lately and I think I’ll stick with my current read for now.

So, how about you, have you read any good mysteries lately?
