This & That

Over the weekend I finished Faithful Place by Tana French and while I did enjoy reading it very much I had a hard time liking the main character. I’ll try do write up a brief review soon but on the whole I still would recommend the book but what I want to know is what she’s working on now?

rulesofcivility.jpgOf course I’ve started a new book and it’s one that’s been talked about a bit in blogland, Rules of Civility by Amor Towles. If you’ve read some great reviews of this book, trust them. I’m enjoying this one so much. I’m not very far into the book but I think it’ll be a good one.

The descriptions paint a vibrant picture of New York in the 1930s and the characters feel so real. The story is about Katey Kontent, her beautiful friend Eve and the handsome banker, Tinker Grey, who befriends them. Here’s just a snippet from the book:

“That New Year’s, we started the evening with a plan of stretching three dollars as far as it would go. We weren’t going to bother oursevels with boys. More than a few had had their chance with us in 1937, and we had no intention of squandering the last hours of the year on latecomers. We were going to perch in this low-rent bar where the music was taken seriously enough that two good-looking girls wouldn’t be bothered and where the gin was cheap enough that we could each have one martini an hour. We intended to smoke a little more than polite society allowed. And once midnight had passed without ceremony, we were going to a Ukranian diner on Second Avenue where the late night special was coffee, eggs, and toast for fifteen cents.”

Can’t you just picture these young women? I can’t wait to get back to my book.

Before I forget, I see that the Slaves of Golconda have a new book to read and discuss for September, The Golden Mean by Annabel Lyon. It sounds really good. I hope I can finally join in on the discussion.

Alright off to read more and continue making a list of which Heyer books to get. So far, I want four books.

The Book Thief

No, not that Book Thief, this post is about a missing book from my collection so I’m assuming there must be a book thief around. I mean, I know I have this book and all of a sudden that’s the book I want to read but it’s nowhere around.

Do you ever just lose a book in your stacks? I’m pretty sure I didn’t have it in a bag of books to donate and I hardly ever loan out books so where is my book? The only thing I can think of is that it may be in Germany waiting for me. I have a tiny collection over there at my in-law’s so maybe it’s there. I guess I’ll find out in a few weeks.

In case you are wondering what book has me going crazy it’s Cotillion by Georgette Heyer. It all started when I realized Sourcebooks is having another of their big eBook sales this week and this time they are offering 46 of Georgette Heyer’s books for $1.99. I was looking through the books I own to decide and that’s what started all of this as I’m pretty sure I already own Cotillion. Anyway, lots of great books on the list. Are you going to get some for yourself? Let me know which ones you recommend.

What else, well I had a fabulous time at my yoga workshop. Two and a half hours of hatha and kundalini. We wrote in our journals, chanted, and laughed. It was so good and that followed up with dinner and more laughter with friends was really great.

Unfortunately not a lot of reading was done this weekend so I’m going to try and get in some pages before going to sleep. I’ll have to tell you about my new book soon.

Isn’t this bookmark great?

You can write notes and comments and keep track of your place. Too cute.

So, my weekend is starting now because I am not going in to work this Friday – yay. But I do have to be in the office on Sunday. Oh well.

I am looking forward to hanging out with my mom and doing a bit of shopping. I’m sure we’ll also go to the library so she can pick up some videos. I may just have to take my book bag with me for some book finds.

I’m also planning on having dinner with friends and I’m going to a yoga workshop. So a full weekend ahead and of course I also plan to finish Faithful Place by Tana French. I’m close to the end and I’m already thinking of what book next. Actually I think I know what I’ll be choosing next but I’ll tell you about that in my next post.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone and more book talk soon.
