Tuesday Intro

fistchapI just started my next book group read so I thought I’d do another First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea.

“She’d been as biddable as a heifer for the two days they had her. She came willingly when they picked her up in the van. She asked no favours, made no appeals for mercy while they waited for Wee Paul to give the final word: kill her or let her go.

At first Iain was pleased that she was passive. He’d never had to muscle a woman before. Then he began to wonder why. She didn’t seem frightened at all, she even smiled sometimes. She only spoke once, to ask a question: How much longer will it be? Slowly they began to realise that she had completely misunderstood what was going on.”

Blood, Salt, Water by Denise Mina.

How’s that for an intro? I picked this up before bedtime last night and quickly realized this may not have been the best choice because this first scene only got more grisly as I kept reading. Oh but I’m intrigued.

Have you read any books by Denise Mina and would this make you want to pick up a copy? I’ve read one of her books before but it’s been a long time and it wasn’t part of this series so I’m looking forward to this one.

Catching Up

bookmessThe last few days have been no fun here at Casa Bookgirl. Unfortunately I caught a cold and even had to take a couple of days off from work. I’m finally doing much better but can only imagine how hectic work will be on Monday as I’ll be playing catch up.

Now, you’d think with the time off at least I got a chance to relax and read but I had such a stuffy head from my cold that it made it hard to read. I felt like all I could do was watch YouTube videos on crafting. I am feeling kind of inspired now so I guess that’s good. Ha.

Actually I did finish River Road by Carol Goodman which I did enjoy and I’ll try to tell you more about it later. I’ve picked up a couple of other books and I have a notification from the library that some holds have come in which I hope to pick up tomorrow.

So that’s what’s been going on around here. Oh and we watched The Big Short which I really liked. Anyway, that’s about it. What about you, what have you been up to? Hope you have a great start of the week!

National Poetry Month

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt’s time to celebrate poetry once again. I try to read poetry throughout the year but with poetry in the spotlight for a whole month, it’s a nice reminder to try to add more of it to my reading routine.

So if you poetry is not quite your thing or you are just looking for other ways to incorporate poetry in your life, then here are some ideas.

Take a look at the 28 most powerful lines of poetry ever written. What do you think?

Want to listen to poetry instead? You can call FSG Dial-A-Poem, each day you will be able to call 949-DIAL-FSG to hear the President and Publisher (and poet himself) Jonathan Galassi recite one of his favorite poems from a recently published collection.

If you are like me and not sure about new poetry, then check out this list of 10 New Must Read Collections.

The coloring craze has also hit poetry. Here’s a Poetry Coloring book.

Finally, April 21 is Poem in Your Pocket Day. The folks at Poets.org have some great ideas of how to celebrate the day. I’ve already printed out some poems (pictured above) and have mailed them out to some friends.

So, I hope you’ll enjoy these links. What are you doing to celebrate National Poetry Month? I’m hoping to go to a poetry reading later this  month so more on that later.
