This & That

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAToday would have been the perfect day to stay home and read because it’s been raining quite a bit since yesterday. We didn’t do too much this weekend but I did take a couple of naps, finally felt well enough to do my bike again (indoors) and yes, we made it to the bookstore!

I didn’t buy anything but my husband got the latest Lee Child book, Make Me. I think he’s read all of the previous books in the Jack Reacher series but I haven’t read one yet but maybe one day.  Why didn’t I get any books? I couldn’t make up my mind. Oh well, I’m sure we’ll go back soon so I can think about that some more this week.

In the meantime, I have received quite a few ARCs that I wanted to show you.

Summer at Little Beach Street Bakery by Jenny Colgan. I am pretty sure I’ve read something by Jenny Colgan a long time ago and this sounds like a fun summer read.

One Paris Summer by Denise Grover Swank. A YA story about love and friendship in Paris.

Portrait Of A Conspiracy by Donna Russo Morin. One murder ignites the powder keg that consumes a Florence under the iron rule of the powerful Medici family.

Poems That Make Grown Women Cry. I am already looking forward to this one.

The Asset by Shane Kuhn. A heart-pounding thriller about a private airport security contractor.

I think the first one I want to pick up is the poetry collection but first I have to finish my book for tomorrow’s book group meeting. So off to do that!

Currently Reading

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI don’t know about you but I’m thrilled the weekend is almost here. This week has been busy at work, I’m still getting over my cold and yesterday traffic was nuts and it took me two hours to get home from work. So, yes, I’m ready for the weekend!

Anyway it’s been a while since I’ve talked about my current reads and I actually have several new books going on that I thought it’d be good to do a little check in. Here’s what I’m reading:

Shake Loose My Skin by Sonia Sanchez. I’ve never read any poetry by Sanchez before but I’m really enjoying this collection. I feel like some of the poems are like snapshots of scenes from her life.

Don’t You Cry by Mary Kubica. This is a thriller about two friends. One disappears and the other one wonders if she ever knew her friend at all. It’s supposed to be a twisted thrill ride like, you guessed it, novels by Gillian Flynn and Paula Hawkins.

Blood, Salt, Water by Denise Mina. I recently posted an intro about this one. This is for my mystery book group so it’s the one I’ll be focusing on more this weekend.

Not pictured are The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee (on my Kindle) and Zagreb Noir which I’ve sort of forgotten about. It’s easier to put aside short story collections as long as you aren’t in the middle of a story. I will get back to this one though as I have enjoyed it so far. As far as The Expatriates goes I am very much in the beginning of that one so can’t tell you too much.

So I’m planning to be busy reading this weekend and catching up on blog reading. Oh and it’s been several weeks since the husband and I went for our date night at the bookstore so we are there this weekend. Hope you all have a great weekend and more book talk soon!

Library Haul

littlelibraryLook, our Little Free Library went up in our neighborhood! I haven’t walked over to it to take a proper look but saw it the other day when I drove past it. I thought what perfect timing as it’s National Library Week. And, in order to do a bit of celebrating of libraries, I went to the library this evening to pick up some holds and do a bit of browsing. I only came out with three books but I’m excited about these. Here’s what was I got:

While the City Slept by Eli Sanders. A Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter’s gripping account of one young man’s path to murder–and a wake-up call for mental health care in America. I tend not to read true crime novels but I read a review of this one and it just sounded like an important book to read.

Bright Dead Things by Ada Limón. From the publisher: A book of bravado and introspection, of 21st century feminist swagger and harrowing terror and loss, this fourth collection considers how we build our identities out of place and human contact. I’m trying to discover new poets and this collection seemed like a good one to check out.

The Shape of Desire by Sharon Shinn. I picked this one up because I thought it would be a good one for the Once Upon A Time reading challenge. It’s a fantasy novel but with some romance and mystery so I think I could really enjoy it.

I would love to start one of these books now but I have five books I’m currently reading and don’t want to add another one yet. Let me know though if you’ve read any of these and what you thought. What have you checked out from the library?
