Books I’m Reading

It’s time for a quick update on the books I’m currently reading. I carried over  Summer Reading by Jenn McKinlay from last month. This is a fun summer romance but unfortunately I just haven’t had a chance to spend too much time on it so I’m only about a quarter way in to the story. If you want to read a great review, check out Lark’s review which she recently posted.

Perhaps my surprise read has been The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin. This is one the books I chose for my 10 Books of Summer reading challenge and so far it’s an excellent read. Science fiction is not my typical genre but as I’m reading this I forget about the genre and just think about what if this were true? The protagonist, George Orr, has dreams which can actually change reality. Not prophetic dreams because the dreams can actually change the past too. He comes across a doctor who is going to help him stop having these dreams but well, there’s definitely more that’s going to go on.

The other book I’m reading is The Night Singer by Johanna Mo, translated by Alice Menzies. This is a Swedish thriller set on an island and I believe the first in a series introducing police detective Hannah Duncker who is back in her hometown and quickly becomes a part of an investigation into the death of a local teenager who also happens to be the son of her best friend. I’m near the end of this one and while I have found it enjoyable I haven’t quite warmed up to the main character.

Finally I also started Syllabus by Lynda Barry, which is another of my 10 Books of Summer selections. This is actually from Lynda Barry’s own notes and plans from her writing workshops. I’m barley into this one but it’s quite fun to see her notes and the exercises the students had to complete for the course.

I hope I can finish at least one of these books this weekend. How about you, do you have any bookish plans this weekend? Hope you have a great one and hope you are reading great books!

More Books

I hope you are all doing well. If you are in the U.S. then Happy 4th of July! I was lucky to have half of the day off yesterday and a day off today. That meant extra time for reading and visiting some bookstores. I did make one small purchase and got a pristine used copy of Father by Elizabeth von Arnim. I love this British Library Women Writers Series edition.

However I realized I never told you about all the other books I got last month. I bought a lot but I also got a lot of review copies. Here are the copies for review:

Two intriguing murder mysteries from Soho Crime A Disappearance in Fiji by Nilima Rao and The Sunset Years of Agnes Sharp by Leonie Swann.

The Murder of Anton Livius by Hansjörg Schneider. This is a crime series set in Basel, Switzerland.

Same Time Next Summer by Annabel Monaghan. Summer romance.

Three books from Europa Editions, Barbara Isn’t Dying by Alina Bronsky (I’ve read a couple of her books and throughly enjoyed them), The Art of Binding People by Paolo Milone (a memoir) and The House on Via Gemito by Domenico Starnone.

Ashes by Anthony Mancini. I hadn’t heard about this imprint before but looks like they bring back some out of print books. (Quick edit to note that Ashes is an original title).

Beware the Woman by Megan Abbott. A thriller I’ve been hearing a lot about lately.

Let me know if you’ve heard of any of these or have put some of these on your summer reading list. Have a wonderful week ahead!

Month in Review

Happy Friday! I hope you are all ready for the weekend. I know I am! So, let’s talk about how the month went.

I read some really good books this month and some that didn’t work. Two five star reads for me were Radium Girls by Kate Moore and May God Forgive by Alan Parks. I really enjoyed Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal and When the Stars Go Dark by Paula McLain. I appreciated the poetry collection of The Wild Iris by Louise Glück even if I didn’t really connect with it. Finally, I was very disappointed with Community Board by Tara Conklin.

As usual I’m carrying over a couple of books into July. Last month I also mentioned I was taking part in Cathy’s 10 Books of Summer reading project. I did start Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson and thought I would have it finished by now but it’s a bit slow going. Not in a bad way as I do like the descriptions of the scenery and weather elements but it’s not a fast read. I want to focus a bit on this  reading project as I’d really like to whittle down those 10 books I chose to read which have been sitting on my shelves for years.

July will be a hectic work month for me as I have a couple of additional work projects but it’s some exciting stuff. Or perhaps I’m just excited because I may actually have a vacation planned for the end of the month!! More on that to come.

So that’s a bit about things around here. I wish you all a wonderful weekend and I hope you read some great books!
