New Month

Happy Mayday! Oh, to be laughing and celebrating with friends, right? One day, at least that is what I tell myself.

Here in Texas business are opening back up and apparently it is not mandatory to wear a face mask just encouraged. I tell you what, when I go grocery shopping I better see people in face masks. We don’t plan to be going out and about for the time being unless it is to the grocery store.

Anyway, let’s talk about books. I finished four books last month, one mystery and the others fiction. So while I may not be doing that well on some of my reading goals I’m actually pretty happy that I finished four books. I thought for sure I hadn’t finished even one. That’s how crazy April was.

Here are the books I read: Strangers by Ursula Archer, You Were There Too by Colleen Oakley, After the End by Clare Mackintosh and How Not To Die Alone by Richard Roper. All four were really enjoyable. And, yes, one of these days I will catch up on book reviews. Ha.

I’ve been wondering have any of you tried any virtual book meetings or author events? I’ve heard about some author talks but haven’t managed to catch any. I think that would be kind of fun. Let me know if you know of any.

Last but not least, thank you all friends for your prayers and thoughts for my family. I’m very happy to report that both of my family members are back home. One has a longer road ahead of him but at least he’s home. And, my thoughts are with all of you and your loved ones. I know we are all extra worried for any of our family members who may be more vulnerable during this time, or ourselves too, but we are going to get through this.

For now, let’s all get back to our books and escape for a while. I hope you have a great start of the month and weekend and more book talk soon!

Tuesday Intro

It’s time for another, First Chapter, First Paragraph Tuesday Intros. Thank you to Yvonne, from Socrates’ Book Reviews who has started hosting this meme. As a reminder this is your chance to post a bit from a book that you are reading or planning to read. My entry comes from a book I started reading this weekend.

“If the car crashed at this speed the impact wouldn’t be enough to kill us instantly. Which you might think is a good thing. But it’s not. The one thing worse than dying on impact is not quite dying on impact. Trust me, I know, I’m a doctor. And, now that I’m thinking about – I’d be genuinely surprised if this rental car even has airbags.

Sparkling snow-covered fields hurtle by at speed. White-dusted hedgerows, sheep, ruts, and ditches – the background of my childhood, a winter blur of pastoral England. Crips sunlight high in a rich cobalt sky.

I flash a look to the driver – face locked in concentration – as the breaks squeal and we change down a gear, grinding into another blind corder. All I can do is will us on and hope we make it in time. Before my patient does something terrible.”

Mr. Nobody by Catherine Steadman

What an opening right? This psychological thriller is about a man that is found on the beach with no major injuries but also no memory. Meanwhile, Dr. Emma Lewis is asked to make an assessment of the patient.

This could be her big chance to make a name for herself but there’s something Dr. Lewis has been hiding and will this put her at risk?

I actually started this one last week although I haven’t made much progress but I’m enjoying it.

What do you think? Would you keep reading?

Crafty Morning

Hi Friends,

I hope you are all doing well and had a good weekend. We ventured out to Target this morning to stock up on some stuff. Well, as much as you can stock up when finding items on shelves is still hit or miss.

The last several days have been pretty stressful as I’ve had some family members in the hospital so to be separated by countries and now the pandemic is really difficult. Both seem to be doing better and just sending prayers for them and keeping in touch via phone as much as possible until we can meet again.

Thanks to jenclair who shares with us about her mail art, she recently posted about calls for cards for those in nursing homes or hospitals who aren’t allowed visits during this time and how much they miss interaction. Well, I’m drowning in paper and I love to craft, so I got to it on Saturday and made several cards to mail out. It was so fun to do this and just wanted to share about that in case you have some time on your hands and could send out some mail to make someone’s day.

On the book front, I’m still feel like I’m reading at a snail’s pace. Today you know what I was really missing? Our outings to the bookstore. I missing sitting down at a table, cafe mocha in hand and stacks of magazines and books. Not that I don’t have books to read but I’m seriously missing our weekly visits.

Anyway, I hope you have a good week ahead and let me know what you were up to this weekend.
