Happy Mayday! Oh, to be laughing and celebrating with friends, right? One day, at least that is what I tell myself.
Here in Texas business are opening back up and apparently it is not mandatory to wear a face mask just encouraged. I tell you what, when I go grocery shopping I better see people in face masks. We don’t plan to be going out and about for the time being unless it is to the grocery store.
Anyway, let’s talk about books. I finished four books last month, one mystery and the others fiction. So while I may not be doing that well on some of my reading goals I’m actually pretty happy that I finished four books. I thought for sure I hadn’t finished even one. That’s how crazy April was.
Here are the books I read: Strangers by Ursula Archer, You Were There Too by Colleen Oakley, After the End by Clare Mackintosh and How Not To Die Alone by Richard Roper.ΓΒ All four were really enjoyable. And, yes, one of these days I will catch up on book reviews. Ha.
I’ve been wondering have any of you tried any virtual book meetings or author events? I’ve heard about some author talks but haven’t managed to catch any. I think that would be kind of fun. Let me know if you know of any.
Last but not least, thank you all friends for your prayers and thoughts for my family. I’m very happy to report that both of my family members are back home. One has a longer road ahead of him but at least he’s home. And, my thoughts are with all of you and your loved ones. I know we are all extra worried for any of our family members who may be more vulnerable during this time, or ourselves too, but we are going to get through this.
For now, let’s all get back to our books and escape for a while. I hope you have a great start of the month and weekend and more book talk soon!
I am so glad to hear that your family members are on the road to recovery
Here’s hoping May ends up being better than April. Things are starting to open up a little more here in Utah, too, but I’m not feeling the urge to go shopping other than my weekly trip to the grocery store. I think I’ll stay hunkered down in my home a little bit longer. Hope you have a great weekend. π
I’m happy to hear that your family members are doing better! Reading is going better for me after a reading slump.
The county’s head of Public Health extended our order for shelter in place and wearing face masks when out in public until mid-June, however, a couple Board of Supervisors for the county have decided they disagree. There’s going to be a vote soon to see about lifting that order. There’s only so much “freedom” they can extend to the angry constituents they are listening to though. They can’t go against the Governor’s orders. So, depending on how the vote goes, we may not have to wear face masks much longer as a requirement, but we’ll still have to shelter in place. I’ll still be wearing my mask, thank you very much. I definitely won’t be hitting the beaches like so many did this past weekend.
April was crazy, wasn’t it? I feel like I didn’t get any reading done either. Yay to finishing your four!
I am glad both your ailing family members are home again. That must be a relief. I hope they continue to heal and get better.
I haven’t attended any author events online. The closest I’ve come to doing anything online (besides blogging) is SKype meetings for work, Mouse’s Zoom dance classes, and her classroom meetings twice a week. Mouse hates it and I’m glad my work computer doesn’t have a camera (it’s really old, evidently). LOL
I hope you have a great May, Iliana. As great a one as possible, anyway. Stay safe and well.
I am so happy your family is recovering Iliana. Our state is still closed except for essential businesses. Even all that has been going on. are only available for emergencies. Our numbers are still pretty high here, schools closed for rest of academic year and I’m pretty certain in September kids will be required to wear masks at school as well. Glad you were able to get some reading done last month with
So glad that your family members are home and recovering. Such good news!
I can’t get this “encouraging” mask use. Some governors did an about-turn on that one. After first making it mandatory, they go yield to their constituents. We’ve already done the unbelievable and stayed home on orders. What’s a mask for a few more months going to hurt?
Glad to hear your family members are on the mend! As for re-opening, our governor has extended the timeline to May 15, but more and more people are getting out and not always wearing masks or practicing social distancing. I’m continuing to be cautious and will be even when we do begin to open up more.
I’m glad to hear your family members are getting better, Iliana. For the re-opening here, our government has extended till 1st June. It is mandatory for us to wear a mask whenever we go out and we can only allow takeaways and definitely no gathering. But of course there’s always some people out there who want to challenge the law. π
Sounds like you’ve a good reading month in April and I’ll look forward to your book reviews.
That’s wonderful news that your family members are home and recovering. I’ve heard it can be a very long recovery after COVID and I hope they continue to heal and improve.
The only literary event I’ve participated in was my book club’s monthly meeting, which we did with Zoom. We had a dozen in attendance and it went very well. We’ll do the same again this month, although I’ve given up on the book (Sapiens). It just wasn’t holding my interest and life is short!
Marg – Thank you! π
Lark – I’m right there with you. I prefer to stay in other than the grocery store trips but I just don’t feel like we are over this yet by any means.
Vicki – Thank you and glad to hear your reading has picked up too!
Literary Feline – I don’t understand the whole mask debacle and how people think it’s infringing on their rights. I’m like wouldn’t you want to be a bit safer and think of others? I mean, yes, I don’t like to wear a mask but I sure will if I think it will help. And, it’s crazy how the beaches have been taken over by people not social distancing and stuff right? I don’t know what people are thinking.
Diane – I do think this must be so harder on younger kids and how they’ll probably either continue distance learning or going to school with masks. Here’s hoping a vaccine is out soon right?
Athira – Totally with you on that. I think it’s ridiculous how some people have been acting over wearing masks and being so offended by them. Get over yourself and do the right thing!
Jen Mullen – I’ve been hearing a lot more lately about some of my co-workers going to the store and surprised at how many people are out there without masks or social distancing. What is wrong with people. Our governor just announced beauty salons can open this Friday. Good grief.
Melody – Thank you! I wish people would just hang in there and err on the side of caution. The more we do our part will be in the benefit for all of society. Stay safe!
Les in OR – Actually, neither of them were in the hospital due to COVID (thank goodness) although both were in for other health reasons and one was a major one but he’s doing better and luckily more good news to come soon. I just wish I could go see them but with both being in different countries, no travel for now. Bummer. I hope our mystery book group will do a zoom meeting this month!
