As I mentioned yesterday, my weekend was spent reading and wow did I finish some good books. Select the title if you want to read more of my thoughts on the books, spoiler-free of course. Here are the three I read:
- Storm Front by Jim Butcher. This was my first book for the Once Upon a Time Challenge. I admit I’ve always skipped over the sci-fi section in the bookstores, but I’m glad about finally exploring this genre. I think I can already tell I will like the Urban Fantasy sub-genre. I mean, I already enjoy stories of vampires so why not add some wizards, demons and faeries to the mix.
- Consequences of Sin by Clare Langley-Hawthorne. I pretty much started and finished this one in a day. It reminded me a bit of the Maisie Dobbs books which I love. The only bad thing about this book is now the wait for the second in the series which won’t be out until April 2008.
- The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears by Dinaw Mengestu. A beautiful story of the immigrant experience in America. It’s a story about losing a country and trying to find a sense of place in a new world.
So now I’m off to find the next good reads.

I read Storm Front the other day myself for the Once Upon a Time Challenge. I just haven’t had the time to sit down and review it. It was a good read, though. I plan to read the series as long as it interests me.
I’ve got to get around to reading Jim Butcher someday. He lives in the town that I work in so I feel guilty that I haven’t done my part to support a local. Not that he is hurting at all, but still.
I just got Consequences of Sin from my library last week. I am looking forward to reading it–more so now that you have given it a thumbs up!
Well, I think all 3 sound interesting. Glad you liked Storm Front enough to continue exploring the genre.
Your review of Consequences makes me want to read it next. I must look to get it on my next book purchase.
Kailana – Me too, I will continue with the series and see what happens. Can’t wait to read your review. Oh and have you checked Jim Butcher’s web site? He’s got a whole community going on!
Carl V. – Isn’t it funny how that happens sometimes. Hope you get to this book, I think you’d enjoy it.
Danielle – I can’t wait to see what you think about it! 🙂
Jenclair – I loved that they were all so different too and yes, I’m kind of excited about venturing into another section of the bookstore 🙂
Gavin – Of course if you get to it you’ll have to let me know what you think. You’ve mentioned that you enjoy historical mysteries so I think this one would definitely be a good one to add to your list!
Oh, I will have to look at the website. There was another fantasy book that I wanted and if the bookstore didn’t have it I was going to order book 2 in the Dresdan Files, but they had it. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad. haha
I enjoyed all of your reviews and will definitely be adding Consequences of Sin and The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears to my wish list. I am so glad you liked Storm Front! I’m a big fan of the Dresden Files books and am looking forward to reading the 9th in the series soon.
Kailana – well, I’d see that as a good thing as it means going back to the bookstore for the second book 🙂
Literary Feline – Thank you! Oh wow, you are up to book 9? I have a lot of catching up to do 😉
Your review of Storm Front was very enticing! I’m adding it to my list of books I’d like to read soon. Thanks!
Wowee-zowee. I am intrigued by the category of Urban Fantasy. (Sort of like Urban Legends, but maybe with more plot.) Maybe that’s the sub-genre that could edge me into Fantasy!
Robin – Thank you! I was just so excited to find a new genre to enjoy.
LK – I honestly think this is what is going to push me into that genre as well. I like the fact that you have real stuff mixed in with supernatural. This reminds me of magical realism which I love.
