Meet Harry Dresden, Wizard. His business listing reads: Lost items found. Paranomral Investigations. Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates. No Love Potions, Endless Purses or Other Entertainment.
Harry lives in Chicago and as the world is getting weirder and darker every single day he is occasionally called upon to help out the Chicago Police Department when they can't solve a case that's out of their normal range.
In this first installment of the Dresden Files, Harry is called by Detective Karrin Murphy to help her find out who killed two lovers. The way they were killed definitely reeks of black magic and Det. Murphy needs answers fast. Too bad, Harry has also agreed to take on the case of a missing spouse and he's also trying to stay one step ahead of a mob boss but he'll accept the job as he's got bills to pay.
There's also the slight issue that Harry's investigations are hampered by the White Council, those who oversee the wizards, who seem to think Harry is the one doing all the bad stuff lately.
Jim Butcher has an action packed novel with enough bad guys for the readers to wonder if Harry will ever get a break. There's a sexy vampire, a vile little demon, menacing scorpions and a brewing storm all working against Harry.
This was a very enjoyable novel with a hero whom you can't help but like. He's quirky, funny and has trouble with electronics; something about his wizardry skills makes electrical items go haywire. I look forward to the next installment of the Dresden Files.
