$7.50

My library fines are usually no more than $1 but I totally forgot to return a video hence the $7.50 fine. I could have mailed in a check but where’s the fun in that right? So tonight I spent a nice evening browsing and checking out some books.

You know what I was surprised to find on the new books shelf though? This book. I thought the publisher had pulled it off the shelves. I’m kind of curious why the library still carries it.

Anyway, I know I’m supposed to be reading the books for the From The Stacks Challenge but I’ve got time (so says the procrastinator in me). Besides I only checked out two books: The Ghost Orchid by Carol Goodman because I’ve enjoyed all of her books so far, and Wednesday’s Child by Peter Robinson because I want to see what happens in this 6th installment of the Inspector Banks series.

Catalogs, Journals & Magazines

I have three new sources keeping me away from my books this evening.

First, the Barnes & Noble catalog. Being a B&N Member I get one of these 150-page things. While I may not be surprised by any of the book mentions (it’s usually the bestsellers that get the limelight), the catalog does come with coupons. Yea, coupons!

Then my sweet friend Claire sent me New Books Magazine. I’ve already enjoyed reading the interviews with Monica Ali, Curtis Sittenfeld, and Zadie Smith. Next up the mini book reviews. You know I’ll be adding a lot of books to my ever growing list. Thank you Claire!

Finally, when I was in Chicago I picked up Bookforum. It’s been so long since I’ve read this journal. I can’t find it in any Dallas bookstore any more (I know, I should subscribe). What a treat it is to read this again.

Recap

We had a great time in Chicago and believe it or not our hotel was next door to a Books-A-Million. I swear I didn’t know that when I booked it. It must be my Bookgirl Radar working. Heh. We didn’t go to that bookstore but found an awesome indie bookstore instead.

We also enjoyed a thought-provoking exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Massive Change will make you think about consumption and innovation, and how design plays a fundamental role in all aspects of life. Plus, the museum has a store which is to die for. How we left with just a few items is beyond me. My husband has a mile long list of design, typography and art books he plans to get one day. I really want this book and this book.

Moving on, I know I said I wasn’t planning on any more challenges or book group reading this year but I cannot resist the challenge presented by Overdue Books. It sounds just like what I need to help whittle down my stacks.

My choices are: Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, The Far Cry by Emma Smith, The Hummingbird’s Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea, The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and Death of an Englishman by Magdalen Nabb.
