Letter Meme

I just got this meme from SciFiChick. The deal is you are given a letter and then you post 10 things you like that begin with that letter. I got “R”. I almost listed Reading as one of my top 10 but that’s a given right. So here we go:

  • Rubber Stamps – I like unusual designs and am not overly fond of cutsey type stamps. Above the Mark is one of my favorite online shops for stamps.
  • Rap Sheet – A great blog all about mystery & crime book news.
  • REI – Before going on vacation we always stop at REI first to check out the latest in comfy shoes and travel gear.
  • Rice – I could eat rice every day. Give me brown rice, steamed rice, Spanish rice, etc. I like all but my favorite is my mom’s recipe. Yummy.
  • Red – I love the color.
  • Rügen – We vacationed there last year and I’m ready to go again.
  • Raspberry Chocolate Truffle Cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory.
  • Recollections – I don’t scrapbook but I do like to go to this store and check out the vast selection of decorative papers and odd bits.
  • Robert Rauschenberg – Go here or here to see some of his art online. Isn’t it fabulous.
  • Ranger Products – I use a lot of the products (embossing powders and pigment pads mainly) from this company and I love them.

This was fun. If you haven’t done this meme yet and would still like to play let me know and I’ll choose a letter for you.

Recent Reads

I finished Street of Crocodiles last night but I’m saving my thoughts on that for the upcoming discussion with the Slaves of Golconda. I promise to have a post on it but for now let’s just say reading it was like being in a dreamland.

Over the weekend I finished Dry Bones that Dream by Peter Robinson. It was another good installment in the Inspector Banks series. I’m glad I have a few of the other books already waiting.

Finally I have some reviews on books I read over the holidays. What can I say, I’m always running behind. A Long Way Down was entertaining, I loved The Girls, but unfortunately I was really disappointed with Bel Canto. I know a lot of you have read Bel Canto and it seems to be one of those books that either you love or hate.

Tonight I’m starting Snow by Orhan Pamuk. I think I’m ready for it.

New Books

I got New Moon today. Oh how I want to read this NOW! Of course an order of books isn’t really an order unless you’ve ordered more than one book right? Here are the other two books I got.

The Case of the Missing Books by Ian Samson. In a field crowded with unlikely sleuths, Israel Armstrong–chubby, nervous, clumsy, headache prone, underachieving–stands out. Jewish and vegetarian, he stands out even more when he accepts a job in Tumdrum, Northern Ireland, where it’s assumed that, if he’s not Protestant, he must be Catholic. Hired to be a librarian, he arrives to find his library closed and his position retitled “Outreach Support Officer”–driver of the decrepit mobile library. Worse, the books he’s supposed to fill it with have disappeared.
Doesn’t that sound great? And, check out the cool cover.

Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O’Neill. In her debut novel, This American Life contributor O’Neill offers a narrator, Baby, coming of age in Montreal just before her 12th birthday. Her mother is long dead. Her father, Jules, is a junkie who shuttles her from crumbling hotels to rotting apartments, his short-term work or moneymaking schemes always undermined by his rage and paranoia. Baby tries to screen out the bad parts by hanging out at the community center and in other kids’ apartments, by focusing on school when she can and by taking mushrooms and the like.
I’ve heard good things about this one.

Before I begin my new books though I have promised myself that I will finish Street of Crocodiles (hopefully tonight) and I need to get ahead in Emma. Why is Emma taking me so long to finish? Unfortunately I chose Emma as my lunch time reading book and I’ve been quite busy at work so I haven’t enjoyed a leisurely lunch in a while. The nerve.
