I finished Street of Crocodiles last night but I’m saving my thoughts on that for the upcoming discussion with the Slaves of Golconda. I promise to have a post on it but for now let’s just say reading it was like being in a dreamland.
Over the weekend I finished Dry Bones that Dream by Peter Robinson. It was another good installment in the Inspector Banks series. I’m glad I have a few of the other books already waiting.
Finally I have some reviews on books I read over the holidays. What can I say, I’m always running behind. A Long Way Down was entertaining, I loved The Girls, but unfortunately I was really disappointed with Bel Canto. I know a lot of you have read Bel Canto and it seems to be one of those books that either you love or hate.
Tonight I’m starting Snow by Orhan Pamuk. I think I’m ready for it.
I’m in the middle of Street of Crocodiles — I think it’ll be an interesting discussion. I’m eager to hear what people think.
I’m not sure what I am going to post about Street of Crocodiles, though I think it is going to be a good book for discussion. It was like being in a dreamland!
I liked the idea of Bel Canto, but found the execution faulty, if I remember correctly.
I’d like to know what it was about Bel canto that ou didn’t like? Was it ending? I liked the book, but I thought the ending was off.
Dorothy – I know, I can’t wait to hear what everyone else thought about it.
Danielle – It’s going to take me a while to put my thoughts together on this book too.
MissMeliss – Exactly, the premise was great the telling not so much.
Sheri – I thought the ending was horrible and I probably shouldn’t base my whole opinion on the book on the ending alone but for me it was just that bad.
I’m thinking of reading Pamuk for Turkey (when I get there!), so I’ll be interested to hear what you make of him.
Crocidlie book-good dreams or nightmare?
Oh, dear. I’m one who absolutely loved Bel Canto. Loved the story and the beautiful writing. Sorry it was a disappointment for you.
I have two more chapters of Street of Crocodiles to go and dreamy is a good way to describe it.
Max – You’re going to Turkey? Lucky you!
Isabel – Not a nightmare but more of a dream where you need a dream dictionary to intepret all the symbols 🙂
Les – Oh no! I’m sorry I came down on it. But, I’m glad to hear you loved it. Again, this just shows what a wonder reading is. Every book will be a different experience for each reader.
Stefanie – Do you think you’ll finish tonight? Ah it’s going to be so good to hear everyone’s thoughts on this!
I really enjoyed basking in the pages of Bel Canto, until the very end, which completely ruined what’s been built up to it.
Orhan Pamuk is something for which you have to set the mood in order to enkpy reading isn’t it? I’ve got Snow as well. Happy reading. 🙂
Whoa, that is interesting about Bel Canto. I don’t think I’ll put it on my TBR list anytime soon.
Always interesting to hear what everyone thinks and feels about different books. I am slowly getting into Snow. I think I agree on needing to be in the right mindset for this one.
Not a fan of Bel Canto, and it seems that everyone else around me loved it. Oh well! Different strokes for different folks. I did enjoy what I’ve read of The Patron Saint of Liars by Patchett, though. Maybe give that one a try if you haven’t already.
Matt – Yep, it was that ending.
LK – I did like Truth & Beauty by Patchett much better so you may want to give that one a try.
Christine – Yeah, I got to page 18 tonight 🙂
Andi – I have Patron Saints of Liars somewhere. I found it at Half Price books and I do look forward to it. As I said, I liked Truth & Beauty so I would definitely try another of her books despite Bel Canto 🙂
Not having read any Pamuk, I’m really looking forward to your impressions of Snow . Don’t think I’m in the right mindset yet, but maybe you’ll get me excited.
litacquisitionist – I’m actually enjoying Snow a lot more than I thought I would. I was a bit apprehensive as I had heard that it was “hard” getting into it but so far I haven’t found it particularly daunting. Who knows though if this will change 🙂
Ditto on Bel Canto. I couldn’t stand it.
I’m in the middle of ‘The Girls’ and am just LOVING it!! A beautiful story.
Patricia – I’m so glad you are enjoying The Girls. I have a little review posted in case you want to read more of my thoughts. Man, that book made me cry! So good.
