Craft Alert!

This week I’ve received two of my favorite artsy/craftsy publications, Bound & Lettered and Artitudezine. As I’ve been out in the evenings this week with book groups I haven’t had a chance to really look at these but I finally found some time to glance through them.

Bound & Lettered has some good articles from an introduction to colored pencils to how to make a love note bookmark. I may have to try that project asap. There is also a very detailed article on two needle coptic binding. I barely remember how to do one needle coptic binding so I don’t see myself trying this one anytime soon. And, I saw a mention of the upcoming book arts conference in Oregon. You do not know how much I want to go to that!

Artitudezine’s Winter issue also has some informative articles but the one item that caught my attention first was that Suzanne Simanaitis, the creative muse behind the zine, has a book out! Kaleidoscope is a book designed to spark your creativity. Enough said, I’ve already ordered it.

Is it the weekend yet? I want to craft.

The Perils of Book Borrowing

I was a bit more than half way through Snow when guess what happens? I get an email from the library reminding me the book is due. I tried to renew it online but I couldn’t because someone had put a hold on it. Darn. I was a good library patron and returned it but you know what this means. By the time the book is available again I may have lost interest in it or it’ll be too long after the fact that I’ll have to re-read it. Sigh.

Anyway, I still went to book group and had a good time catching up with Christine and the book group members. We had quite a crowd this time. We had a good discussion on the book (I did more listening than discussing) and while I think most people didn’t necessarily love the book, at the same time everyone seemed to agree it was a worthwhile read.

Now it’s time for me to start a new book. I’m off to spend some quality time in front of my stacks.

Of Mystery & Crime

I met with my Murder on Mondays book group tonight even though I didn’t read the book, but from the comments that everyone made it seems that this wasn’t a popular pick anyway.

The next few months will be exciting ones for our group as we have several authors who are coming to meet with us. In March Deborah Crombie will be joining our group to discuss her Duncan & Kincaid series. I’ve read a few of those books and have enjoyed them quite a bit.

In other mystery news, if you are a subscriber to the WSJ you might want to double check the Sunday edition. There was an article on the four finest mystery anthologies. One mentioned was A Catalogue of Crime. I want to get my hand on those anthologies. Can you imagine how many new series I’d find to try out?

Finally, Ian Rankin fans make sure to update/get your subscription to the New York Times. Starting in April, the Times will be running a serialised story by Rankin. The series will last 14 weeks, and no, it won’t be a Rebus story. I wonder if my library carries the paper?
