Things To Do (Or Not)

I’m really looking forward to the weekend although I won’t be able to join Christine and her husband for a museum outing as we had planned. My husband has a big project going on so we’ll have to go another time.

I’m also staying far away from the big bookstores on Friday evening. I think Pottermania is wonderful but I go to the bookstore to relax and what with the contests and events going on for the Harry Potter book release I’m sure the bookstores will be anything but relaxing. For all of you who are going to read the book this weekend – have fun!

So it sounds like I have a lot of free time on my hands right? Well, I’ve already got a little list going on of things I want to do:

  • Visit Half Price Books. I have coupons!!
  • Spend time (and money) at the Rubber Stamp Convention. I don’t really need any new crafty things but these events only happen twice a year. I have to go.
  • Return library books and pay fines. Only $4.50, but that could have been a hazelnut latte. Grr.
  • Finish a book.
  • Check out Shelfari. Thanks for the link Heather!

Hope everyone has a great weekend. I know I can’t wait for it to start.

Missed Opportunity

I went to get my hair cut today and while waiting for my stylist instead of reading the book I had with me you know what I picked up? People Magazine! Ack, my Bookgirl credibility is shot. Lucky for me, I didn’t have to wait too long.

So no new updates on books read or anything like that tonight. Actually I feel like I’m in slow mode still trying to finish the four books I talked about last week. What’s worse is that I feel like starting a new book. I’m sure some of you can relate to that right?

Anyway, it’s kinda late now and I should be going to sleep but I’m kind of awake so off to read a good book.

Best In Mystery & Suspense

Know who else is celebrating a landmark date? Mystery Scene Magazine has just come out with its 100th issue. I’ve been savoring my copy and jotting down titles I want to read. Here are just some of the titles that have gone on my TBR list:

  • The Scent of Blood by Raymond Miller. The novel begins with the hit-and-run death of a pediatric surgeon involved in stem cell research. This novel features and ex-poet turned PI. Ooh, I like the sound of that.
  • The Savage Garden by Mark Mills. In 1958, Cambridge undergraduate Adam Strickland, who’s studying a curious Tuscan Renaissance garden for his art history thesis, is equally intrigued by both the garden of the Villa Docci estate and its elderly owner, Signora Francesca Docci.
  • The Big Girls by Susanna Moore. In spare yet hypnotic prose, Moore examines the bond between a young psychiatrist and a mentally ill patient in her devastating sixth novel, set at an upstate New York federal women’s prison.
  • The Price of Silence by Camilla Trinchieri. Emma Perotti is a college teacher in her 50s, accused of a particularly gruesome murder. A gripping, tension-filled novel about the consequences of loss.
  • The Last Enemy by Grace Brophy. Commissario Alessandro Cenni delves into the secret lives of the members of the aristocratic Casati family in Assisi, Italy, after their American niece is murdered during Holy Week in Brophy’s rock-solid debut. Another Italian setting so I can’t resist.

There are many more titles to consider but those are some that immediately caught my attention. Anyway, this is a must read magazine for mystery fans.
