Literary Berlin

welcome poster
I’m still trying to sort through all the fliers and papers I collected on my trip and I ran across another magazine I forgot I had bought, Exberliner, an English language city guide. What is special about the issue I bought is that it’s the literary issue with a focus on English-language bookstores in Berlin.

Why didn’t I have this before I went! Actually last year I did visit one of the bookstores mentioned in the article and now at least I am prepared for next year’s trip. Plus now I also know where to go for some poetry readings.

Anyway, I wanted to post some book reviews tonight but I got sidetracked when I couldn’t find a lot of my photos. Talk about freaking out because I thought I’d lost them forever. Luckily my husband was able to recover the memory card and now my photos are all saved. Big sigh of relief.

So instead of the book reviews I’ll give you a list of books that caught my attention and I wish I could have bought but that Euro was making things a bit expensive so these books remain on the wish list for now. If anyone has read any of these let me know what you think.

What I Bought

Book Poster

Don’t read any posters. Read these books.

We saw this poster when we first arrived at the Frankfurt Airport. An auspicious start to good vacation don’t you think?

Even though my German is still not good it doesn’t take away from my enjoyment of the bookstores. Aside from checking out how well stocked the English book sections are, I also browse around the whole store. I want to see the differences in book cover art, I want to figure out the titles of books and I like to come upon favorite books.

I didn’t go too crazy with the book buying this time around but on my trips to Buchhandlung Hugendubel in Frankfurt and Thalia in Braunschweig I bought the following books:

I also bought some cute bookmarks and a copy of Marie Claire Idées. Hurrah. I’d heard a lot about this magazine from some of my crafty friends but I hadn’t been able to find one in Dallas. Let’s see if I can still put my knowledge of high school French to good use. At least there are a lot of pictures of pretty things so I’ll enjoy those. Heh.

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll tell you about the books I read. Gotta finish up my book reports.

I’m Back

Is vacation really over? I can’t believe it. Actually I just don’t want to admit it is and perhaps that’s why I’ve had the hardest time writing this post. I’m sure in a few days I’ll get used to being back but for now I want to pretend I’m still on vacation.

We really did have a wonderful time. Just some highlights:

  • We went to the Harz mountains for a day of hiking. It was a beautiful day with sunny skies but a bit chilly so I was all bundled up. After some time hiking though the mittens and scarf were put away. A nice hike of course meant a treat at a cafe afterwards.
  • I visited the bakeries a lot. Thank goodness for all the walking we did everywhere otherwise none of my clothes would fit.
  • Spending a day in Goslar. It’s hard to put the camera away in this town – you just want to capture it all. We also went to the Modern Museum of Art which just happens to be located in house built in 1528. How cool is that.
  • Stayed in Berlin for a few days. We visited friends, museums and Knut! That little polar bear is not so little anymore but still very cute. And, Berlin is just all kinds of awesome. I want to live there.
  • Wandered around the canals of Amsterdam. I wanted to visit some museums but we just couldn’t get enough of seeing the city so we just spent hours walking and taking pictures instead. The museums will have to wait until another trip. I also discovered some very cool bookshops like the American Book Center and Boekie Woekie (more on those later).

There’s more to tell and many pictures to show you so I hope you don’t get bored of my vacation talk over the next several days. I took more than 400 pics so it’ll be a while before I go through them and can show you but I promise I will.

And, I promise to tell you all about the books I bought (six) and the books I read (10!).

The only bad thing about vacation is that I’m terribly behind in my blog reading. I’ve missed all of my bloggy friends but luckily that is one thing I have to look forward to now that I’m back. I can’t wait to catch up with all of you. In the meantime, here is one little pic just to give you a preview of more to come.
