Emily

Today I’ve been enjoying my book The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson. Here is one in particular that I really liked.

UNTO my books so good to turn
Far ends of tired days;
It half endears the abstinence,
And pain is missed in praise.

As flavors cheer retarded guests
With banquetings to be,
So spices stimulate the time
Till my small library.

It may be wilderness without,
Far feet of failing men,
But holiday excludes the night,
And it is bells within.

I thank these kinsmen of the shelf;
Their countenances bland
Enamour in prospective,
And satisfy, obtained.

Part One, Life, LXXIV

In other bookish news, have you seen The Reader’s Catalog? So many bookish goodies. I want one of everything. I think I need to get on their mailing list and when the catalog arrives I’ll leave it on my husband’s desk as a little hint. I mean, Christmas is coming right.

New Stack

Remember I mentioned that I got distracted from the Read-a-thon by a box from Barnes & Noble? I didn’t go into the details of the goodies that came in then because I wanted to get back to reading but here are the new books on my shelves:

  • The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson. This is one of those books I’ve been meaning to add to my shelves for, well, forever and now I finally have it.
  • The Birth House by Ami McKay. This seemed to be a favorite for a lot of book bloggers. I know I had this one on my wishlist for a long time.
  • Nature of Monsters by Clare Clark. Yet another book that I’d been coveting for a while.
  • The Observations by Jane Harris. Someone please host a Victorian era challenge because I can’t get enough of books set in during this time!
  • Sweetness in the Belly by Camilla Gibb. I’m sort of tempted to exchange this with another of book from my Armchair Traveler challenge reads.

I was also taking a peek through the B&N latest Discover Great New Writers newsletter and you know what? I had already heard of at least five books from book bloggers. I love that. Here’s to all of us discovering a lot of new books this Fall.

Post Read-a-thon

Happy Sunday everyone! I guess we all made it through the 24 HR read-a-thon right? I had such a great time participating even though my hours read is actually a very small number – 5! That’s right, just five hours out of the 24. I really thought I’d read more but that’s okay.

What I didn’t expect was to do as much blog hopping throughout the day but it was addicting to see how the readers were doing. I also want to send a big thank you to all the cheerleaders who kept us motivated. All of this also means that I’ve “met” a lot of other book bloggers – yippee!

Dewey, many thanks for hosting a such a wonderful event. I’m looking forward to the next one.

So, now what to do today? I think my husband and I are going out to catch this film, do a bit of shopping at Whole Foods and as there’s a Barnes & Noble next to Whole Foods, well, we may just have to pop in for a bit.
