Remember I mentioned that I got distracted from the Read-a-thon by a box from Barnes & Noble? I didn’t go into the details of the goodies that came in then because I wanted to get back to reading but here are the new books on my shelves:
- The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson. This is one of those books I’ve been meaning to add to my shelves for, well, forever and now I finally have it.
- The Birth House by Ami McKay. This seemed to be a favorite for a lot of book bloggers. I know I had this one on my wishlist for a long time.
- Nature of Monsters by Clare Clark. Yet another book that I’d been coveting for a while.
- The Observations by Jane Harris. Someone please host a Victorian era challenge because I can’t get enough of books set in during this time!
- Sweetness in the Belly by Camilla Gibb. I’m sort of tempted to exchange this with another of book from my Armchair Traveler challenge reads.
I was also taking a peek through the B&N latest Discover Great New Writers newsletter and you know what? I had already heard of at least five books from book bloggers. I love that. Here’s to all of us discovering a lot of new books this Fall.

I clicked on the Discover Great New Writers link and was pleased to see that I, too, had heard of several of them and had even read a couple (thanks to ARC’s). I still love my Emily Dickinson anthologies, and I’ve had them for years and years.
Can’t wait to hear your opinion on the rest of your stack.
I’m going to host a Victorian Challenge!!! I’m working out the details and debating on when to start it. Email me with your thoughts!
I almost bought The Nature of Monsters from the bargain table at B&N on Sunday! I wish I had – instead I grabbed a copy of Thud! by Terry Pratchett only to find that my husband had already bought a copy!
Ohhhhhhhhh Birth House. Loved it. Love, love, loved it.
Hmm Victorian challenge….interesting…tempting.
I *loved* The Birth House and I noticed the new paperback recently – love the cover. I found The Observations to be a fun read. Wow, a Victorian challenge. That could actually tempt me….
Looks like you’ve got some great books there. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Sweetness in the Belly!!
Heather, make sure that you are included here:

Ili, A Work in Progress and you will read the most. She loves Vicky novels also.
jenclair – Isn’t that cool? We are in the know 🙂 I love Emily Dickinson’s poetry and I can’t believe I didn’t have a good anthology of her work. I’m so happy with my book.
Heather T. – Oh girl you just made my day!! I’ll send you an email today.
Somer – Oh no… That’s happened to me before. I think B&N will let you return it though so maybe you can go back and get the other book.
Sassymonkey – I remember you mentioning the book! I am so excited I got and it was even at a bargain price. Woot!
Tara – I don’t think I’ve seen the paperback cover. I’ll have to check it out. I love Victorian settings so I know I will totally join any challenge with that as a theme.
Stephanie – Me too! It sounds so interesting.
Isabel – I know, she always finds good ones too which of course only add to my TBR list 🙂 Love it.
I read the three middle books you just received–liked them all! I would be distracted by a new box of books, too! 🙂
There’s a book club that is reading Sweetness in My Belly, and I’m interested in joining. (They go to restaurants that match the literature. How great is that?) — I otherwise would have never heard of this book.
I’d heard of a few of those new writers as well – this is one of the reasons why I love book blogs.
Oh, all sorts of goodies you have now! Hmmm…what to read next…
I just got a $25 Amazon gift certificate in the mail…now the dilemma of what to get! =)
How interesting that the first book I saw, featured on the book table, at Borders today is Sweetness in the Belly. It’s a lovely cover. 🙂
Still hunting for books for the holidays…
I hope you enjoy Birth House better than I did. I know it’s been quite popular, but for some reason it fell flat for me.
Oh, nice list! I’d like to read Clare Clark sometime; she sounds fabulous. And enjoy those Emily Dickinson poems!
Danielle – I especially remember you mentioning Nature of Monsters. I’m sure that’s how that one got on my list 🙂
LK – Oh now that’s a good way to do a book club!
Nymeth – I totally agree! I love the book magazines but I find I add a lot more books to my wishlist after hearing about them from all of you guys.
Christine – Lucky you chica! Have you decided yet?
Matt – Serendipity! It is a pretty cover isn’t it. I’m curious to hear what books will finally end up in your backpack!
Les in NE – Ah well, that happens right. I actually sometimes don’t want to read a book that’s very popular right away for fear that it will not live up to the hype. That’s happened to me several times.
Dorothy W. – I’ve been reading a lot of Dickinson today. I’m loving my book!
Emily Dickinson is my favorite poet and I love her collected poems book. I have two copies! One was a gift my parents gave me when I was first discovering poetry and the other was a copy someone gave me later in my life. I just never had the heat to give either one away. 🙂 Enjoy your books!
Yummy yummy books! I’m very interested in The Birth House. I’ve heard nothing but good things about that one.
Literary Feline – Aww, I probably wouldn’t give it away either. I don’t have a problem culling the shelves but if it’s a book that has some personal meaning then it must stay 🙂
Andi – I know! It seems like a lot of book bloggers mentioned that one right? I hope it will be a good read.
