For My Wish List

I know we all have long lists of books that we want to get to one day. It seems that they are never ending right? Still that doesn’t stop me from adding more books to mine. Today I was going through one of my purses and came across a recent list I jotted down while at the bookstore one day and now I have to add these to my Bookpedia file.

Here are the books that I’ve added to my wish list:

  • Swim to Me by Betsy Carter. This one sounds like it could be a sweet coming-of-age story. I like those.
  • Saving the World by Julia Alvarez. I’ve read two books by Alvarez, one I liked and the other I didn’t so we’ll see what happens with the third book.
  • They Did It With Love by Kate Morgenroth. Love and murder in the burbs.
  • Touchstone by Laurie R. King. A thriller which seems to be getting a lot of good reviews.
  • Night Train to Lisbon by Pascal Mercier.

For now I’m very excited at having received an advance copy of An Incomplete Revenge by Jacqueline Winspear. This is the fifth book in Maisie Dobb’s series and one I’ve been anxiously awaiting. If you want to read more about it check out Danielle’s recent review on it. Sounds great doesn’t it. I think my other reads will be put aside tonight.

What A Find

I made a very quick stop at the library yesterday to make some copies and pick up a DVD for my mom so I stayed far away from the new books bookshelves and the magazines, but I couldn’t pass up the “sale” room. This little area has all kinds of books that the library is selling usually for $1 for a hardcover and .50 cents for a paperback.

What did I find? I walked away with only one book but I think it was a super find. For .50 cents I got The Penguin Book of International Women’s Stories. Short stories and some in translation. In the 33 short stories included in this book are writings by Anita Desai, Nadine Gordimer, Tatyana Tolstaya, Banana Yoshimoto and many others. I think I’m set for the Short Story reading challenge!

Of course today wouldn’t you know it, I get an email notification from the library telling me I have two books on hold and ready for pick-up. I’ll go later this week and I think I’ll have to check out the little sales room again to see if there are any hidden treasures.

The Sunday Salon

SundaySalonBadge

This is my first time participating in The Sunday Salon and while I may not join in every Sunday, I’m looking forward to reading the posts by other participants. Plus, reading and talking about books is a great way to spend a Sunday don’t you think.

So, this morning I woke up late and stayed in bed, eating a little brötchen with nutella and reading the fabulous zine Art & Life by Teesha Moore. As I mentioned in my previous post, I had planned to go to a rubber stamp festival and I did but it was kind of a bust. My three favorite vendors weren’t there. I know I can shop at their online stores but it’s so much more fun to actually see the stuff. Anyway, I did find one vendor who had some of the Teesha Moore zines so at least all was not lost.

I bought issue 9 which is filled with all the vibrant colors and funky drawings well known to Teesha Moore fans. There is one article on guerilla art which I found quite inspiring. The author mentions leaving behind little art pieces for others to find. I have often wanted to do something similar… I’m not really sure what I’d leave behind but I like the idea.

My other favorite piece in the zine has been a visual essay on drawers. Wooden cabinets, flat filing cabinets, old library card catalog cabinets, etc. all providing unique storage for art goodies. I would love to have a library card catalog.

Anyway, I’ve already looked through the zine twice but I know I’ll go back to it for inspiration. Today I’m hoping to find time to sit at my craft table and do a bit of jouranling. And, of course spend a bit more time with Great Expectations – I am almost at the half way mark. Hope everyone enjoys a relaxing day!
