I made a very quick stop at the library yesterday to make some copies and pick up a DVD for my mom so I stayed far away from the new books bookshelves and the magazines, but I couldn’t pass up the “sale” room. This little area has all kinds of books that the library is selling usually for $1 for a hardcover and .50 cents for a paperback.
What did I find? I walked away with only one book but I think it was a super find. For .50 cents I got The Penguin Book of International Women’s Stories. Short stories and some in translation. In the 33 short stories included in this book are writings by Anita Desai, Nadine Gordimer, Tatyana Tolstaya, Banana Yoshimoto and many others. I think I’m set for the Short Story reading challenge!
Of course today wouldn’t you know it, I get an email notification from the library telling me I have two books on hold and ready for pick-up. I’ll go later this week and I think I’ll have to check out the little sales room again to see if there are any hidden treasures.
That’s really a good deal! I know I wouldn’t pass it up if I were you too! Happy reading! 🙂
That is quite a find! I love library sales. Oooh, and I see that it has The Bloody Chamber. That is one great story.
Wow — that IS a great find!
Cool! I’ve been on a short story kick lately and that one sounds awesome!
Cheapie finds are good!
Hope you find something else next week.
Great find!
Melody – I’ve told myself that I need to be a bit more conscious of my book purchases but 50 cents is nothing! Couldn’t leave it behind 🙂
Nymeth – The Bloody Chamber is an Angela Carter story right? I remember your review of one of her books during the R.I.P. challenge I believe. I’ve been wanting to read Carter since then!
Dorothy W. – I can’t wait to go back and see what else they have.
Kristen – Did you join the short story challenge? Sounds like it’d be perfect for you now 🙂
Isabel – They are the best aren’t they. I’m going back this week to see what else they have.
3M – I know! 🙂
That is certainly a steal!
Every time I request books, they come in one at a time, which requires multiple trips to the library. Glad you found a bargain!
That is a find! And that always happens to me to. The day after I am at the library I receive the notice that my book is ready to be picked up.
Ooh, the book of short stories sounds yummy! I was browsing the ever-growing fiction section at the college today, and noticed a larger amount of short story collections than their used to be. Must ravage them!
I have never heard of this title, although I’ve owned a collection of anthologies from Penguin. A great find indeed!
My local library will have a mini sale next week…I’m looking forward to finding some bargains. 🙂
Carl V. – I know – I love it!
jenclair – Hee,hee. I think there must be a law about that somewhere.
Stefanie – Maybe it’s the librarians getting a little kick out of their patrons. I don’t mind. I love the library and would happily go every day!
Andi – See, I’m so lost when it comes to short stories. I definitely don’t read enough but I’m hoping the Short Story challenge motivates me to read more!
Matt – I can’t believe I found it. I was looking at B&N for short stories last week and was kind of disappointed at their offerings. So I definitely lucked out. Oh good luck at your library sale. Can’t wait to see what you find!
What a lucky find!! My library only has these two small tables and there is usually only YA stuff or YA mags–nothing appealing. But I still look…
Danielle – I was so surprised at the find. I tend to forget about the sales room as I do see a lot of stuff I wouldn’t buy (lots of children’s and romance novels) but I need to check more often ’cause you never know.
