Women In Translation

Another post from me so soon? Well, it’s Women in Translation Month and I just can’t pass up the opportunity to talk about a reading event I love.

In case you don’t know, WIT was started by Meytal Radzinski in 2014, with the hope of celebrating the works of women in translation. Did you know that only 36% of books translated into English are from non-European countries? Hopefully by highlighting WIT, more people will reach for a translated book written by a woman.

Every year I try to set a yearly intention to read more books in translation and I’ve been doing pretty well with that goal. What I’d like to challenge myself to do is only read books in translation this month. With the exception of my mystery book club pick, I’m going to challenge myself to only start translated books written by women.

I don’t have high expectations because you know it’s been a bit of a tough reading year for me but it’s always fun to think about reading goals isn’t it?

In case you want to participate and not sure where to start the Women in Translation page has lots of great resources. I also love to highlight Words Without Borders and Latin American Literature Today. There are a few other favorite resources I go to for works in translation so I hope to share more about those soon.

Anyway, I hope you decided to join in and I’d love to hear what you are reading or planning to read.

Month in Review

I hope you have all had a wonderful July. Were you doing Paris In July reading or any other special summer reading project? My reading was going so well in June and it totally tanked in July. I haven’t completed a single book this month! I partly blame it on the heat which according to the news, Austin just experienced its hottest July on record. Get me outta here!

Well, it’s not just the heat. Work was again super busy and add to that I’m still providing a lot of care for my mom. She’s making improvements but it’s really slow going. I was also disappointed earlier when I was expecting one of my cousins to come visit (we haven’t seen each other since the start of the pandemic!) but for various reasons her trip was cancelled. I am so bummed out I don’t get to see her and also have a bit of a break from care giving but hopefully all will work out later in the year.

So while it’s been a rough month,  there’s also been a lot of good stuff. Like, my mom’s progress, trying new recipes, buying new books and staying in touch with family and friends.

I hope I can get back on track with my reading in August. I’m so excited about Women in Translation month. Are you reading any books in translation for that? I have a stack of potentials so I’ll try to share more about those soon.

Stay cool my friends and hope you are having a delightful summer!

Paris In July

I’m late to post but I couldn’t pass up joining Paris in July. How I wish we could be traveling to Paris but that’s not something I can do right now so thank goodness for stories that take us to other places, right?

Paris in July is a reading event that has been around for years and this year’s event is hosted by Tamara at Thyme for Tea and Deb at Readerbuzz. The month-long reading event encourages readers to celebrate Paris through books, film, music, cuisine, etc. I’ve participated the last couple of years and didn’t want to miss out.

I’ve actually already started one book, Lean on Me, by Serge Joncour, translated by Jane Aitken & Louise Rogers Lalaurie. This book was a prize-winning bestseller in France and it’s the story of two lonely people who come together in Paris. I’m really enjoying this book and the descriptions of the busy city very much.

I don’t know how many books I can get to but what I would like is to read books that were originally published in French. Let’s see how I do.

How about you, are you also joining in and reading some books set in Paris?
