Catching Up

I hope you all had a great weekend. I wish I could have spent more time reading this weekend but I guess there is never enough time is there?

Kicking off the week is of course Banned Book Week. I think all of us readers know the importance of having access to books and the freedom to read. It’s sad and infuriating that my state, Texas, is leading in banning books. All I can say is that we have to fight this censorship. I am hoping I can get to one of my indie bookstores this week and make a purchase supporting diverse reads. If not I can always shop via Bookshop.org and lend my support. I hope you will too!

This week my book group is meeting to discuss Chapter & Curse by Elizabeth Penney. I’m looking forward to going and surprise, I’ve even finished the book on time!

A few other things I would like to do this week is actually make a stop at my local library. It’s been ages since I’ve been and I have some magazines to drop off. I love that they have a bin you can leave your gently used magazines and pick up any other you might like. I seriously need to think about cutting back on magazines. I love them but I have stacks unread. Actually, I’m curious if my library has a display for Banned Book Week as they have done one in the past.

So that’s a bit about what’s been going on around here. I’m still reading Silence of the White City by Eva García Sáenz but I’ve also added A Burning by Megha Majumdar. Both books are so good but of course I’m tempted to add another to the mix, in particular a spooky book for R.I.P. XVII. What’s a bookgirl to do!

Anyway, I hope you all have a great start to the week and would love to hear about what you are reading.

Sunday Salon

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope you’ve been enjoying your weekend. Welcome to another Sunday Salon post. Thank you to Deb at Readerbuzz for hosting the chat.

What I’m watching: We finished watching The Old Man which was a really good spy drama. I’ve heard there will be a second season but will have to wait until next summer. Now we get to find something else to watch.

What I’m reading: I’ve got several books going but one that has surprised me is Chapter and Curse by Elizabeth Penney. I like cozy mysteries but sometimes they can be quite formulaic and while this does have a lot of the tropes we expect from a cozy, there’s just something else about it that is really capturing my interest. Could be the bookstore setting! Excited to see there are several more in this series.

What I’m savoring: You guys, I discovered Häagen-Daz Dulce de Leche churro ice cream bar. OMG. So yummy.

What I’m enjoying: I’ve mentioned my love for washi tape and I just got a a little package this weekend. Some fun designs from this cute shop. I use washi tape in my planner, journals, and letters. How about you, do you enjoy washi tape? What do you use it for?

What I’m dreaming about: The fall brings some fun events to town like a book festival, reading challenges to look forward to and I’ve just signed up for a bookbinding workshop next month. Not to mention hopefully nicer weather so we can enjoy outdoor dining and some nearby trails.

What is my quote for the week: “Nothing is worth more than this day.” ~ Goethe

Wishing you a great week ahead filled with lots of good books!

New Releases for September

It’s been quite a while since I did one of these posts but wanted to share a bit of the new releases which have caught my eye. Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the review copies.

The Guest House by Robin Morgan-Bentley. Jamie and Victoria are off for a last quick vacation before the arrival of their first baby. They go to a remote country guesthouse where all seems wonderful until the next day. This might be the perfect choice for spooky season right?

The Means by Amy Fusselman. Shelly Means, a wealthy stay-at-home mom and disgraced former PTA president, is poised to get the one thing in life she really wants: a beach house in the Hamptons. Getting the house will be anything but simple.

The House in the Orchard by Elizabeth Brooks. When a World War II widow inherits a dilapidated English estate, she uncovers a diary written by an adolescent girl named Maude Gower. Looking for answers, she begins reading, only to unravel more questions about the mysterious past and many secrets hidden deep within the walls of Orchard House. I love any story that features a diary or letters.

The Best Friend by Jessica Fellows. Ella and Kate. Kate and Bella. From childhood they were bosom friends, Bella sensible and cautious, Kate gregarious and just a little dangerous. A story of toxic friendship between two kindred spirits.

The Most Likely Club by Elyssa Friedland. In 1997, grunge is king, Titanic is a blockbuster (and Blockbuster still exists), and Thursday nights are for Friends. Four best friends and high school seniors are ready to light the world on fire. Their yearbook superlatives confirm it: Most Likely to Win the White House, Cure Cancer, Open a Michelin-Starred Restaurant, and Join the Forbes 400.Fast forward twenty-five years and nothing has gone according to plan.

Because I Could Not Stop for Death by Amanda Flower. Emily Dickinson and her housemaid, Willa Noble, realize there is nothing poetic about murder in this first book in an all-new series. I tend not to like mystery series which take real-life people as the main characters but I love Emily Dickinson’s poetry so I couldn’t resist this one.

What do you think? Is there a title that interests you the most?
