New ARCs

Recently I got a nice bundle of review copies. I just wish I could read all of these right now but I’m deep into five books right now so I’ve got to finish some of those before I start these but don’t these sound good?

  • The Murderer’s Daughters by Randy Susan Meyers. It’s the story of two sisters and their journey to overcome family violence. This sounds like it’ll be sad but nevertheless a gripping read.
  • The Heights by Peter Hedges. Tim and Kate have a great, ordinary love. Settled in their crowded apartment amid lavish brownstones of Brooklyn Heights, they raise their sons never wondering if their marriage is anything but solid and true. But their neat and tidy world is about to be tested by the arrival of a wealthy, beautiful and impulsive new neighbor. Ooh drama!
  • Exit the Actress by Priya Parmar. A vivid imagining of the Restoration London of Charles II with Nell Gwyn as a powerful and engaging heroine set in the busy world of the theater. Looks like a fun historical novel.
  • The Mistress of Nothing by Kate Pullinger. Based on the real lives of famed traveler Lady Duff Gordon and her maid, the novel takes readers on a journey from the high society of Victorian England to the uncharted far reaches of Egypt’s Nile Valley. I really like the premise of this one!

As I said, all of these are intriguing to me and I would love to start them now but they’ll have to wait just a bit longer. Have you read any of these? How about you, got any new review copies that you are excited about?

If I Stay

ifistay.jpg“7:00 A.M.  Everyone thinks it was because of the snow. And in a way, I suppose that’s true.”

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

When seventeen-year-old Mia wakes up on a wintery day to snow falling she knows this can only mean one thing. No classes. Her little brother is overjoyed as can be expected, her father who is a teacher also has the day off and suddenly her family decides to make a day of it and go for a ride.

No one thinks of any consequences. Mia’s mother is happy to spend the day with her family instead of work, the only argument is which music to decide on for the road trip, Mia is a cellist so she wants the classical music station. NPR, SpongeBob, everyone gets a turn to listen and no one expects what happens next.

A four-ton pick up truck going sixty on the slick roads loses control and crashes into Mia’s family. The car is totaled and all Mia can distinctly make out is the radio but why is she outside of the car? As she starts to comprehend what has happened she realizes that her former life has been shattered. Her parents are dead and her little brother is hanging on to life. She realizes that her body is also hanging on to life.

But what kind of life will she have without her parents? As Mia wanders the halls in the hospital while her body is being cared for by the doctors, she takes the reader through her life. How her parents met, how she developed her love of music and how she fell in love with Adam, a musician in a rock band.

At the hospital Mia sees her grandparents, friends and Adam react to the tragedy. She realizes they are hurting just as much as she is and she listens when it is suggested that it is up to her to stay on earth. While I found Mia a bit distant at times and not really as emotional as I would have imagined her to be, which I assume was to show us that she was in a state of limbo, it was a moment her grandfather has at her hospital bedside that just made my tears flow.

Even though I thought it was a bit predictable in the ending I still really liked this book. I thought Mia’s character was very believable as she seemed to straddle that line between being almost an adult and still being young and full of insecurities.

Book Buys

You didn’t think I was going to stop buying books after I got the Kindle did you? I mentioned sometime last week that I bought some books on Amazon but I guess with all the snow storms everywhere my box of books is still in transit. Darn.

But, I did have a coupon for Borders and so yesterday when we went out for our date night I bought The Lotus Eaters by Tatjana Soli on the recommendation of Melody, Sandy, Naida and many more of you who’ve loved the book. I can’t wait to read it.

I also found The Company of Liars by Karen Maitland which was a book I had wanted to buy some time ago but hadn’t been able to find until now.

Also yesterday was a good mail day as I got Dreaming in English by Laura Fitzgerald which I won from a giveaway on Serena’s blog. Good times for my shelves.

Finally today I went to my new mystery book group and we had a very fun and lively discussion of Pronto by Elmore Leonard (I didn’t like it). I’ve only met with the group twice but I think I’m really going to enjoy this group. The discussion often veered into other topics but it was always entertaining.

That’s the scoop for now. I know I keep saying reviews to come but really this week I must tell you about some of my recent reads otherwise I’ll completely forget about them. Don’t you hate falling behind on reviews? Happens to me all the time.
