Winners & A Good Day

Drumroll please…. The winners of my Laura Lippman giveaway are: Heather & Rhonda who each won a copy of The Girl in the Green Raincoat and Amanda W. who won I’d Know You Anywhere. Thank you all for participating and thank you to AuthorsOnTheWeb for providing the books for the giveaway. I’m so looking forward to reading Laura’s books too.

So how was everyone’s weekend? Mine was quite good although not long enough of course. I did go to the Renegade Craft Fair and found a great bookish goodie I had to have.

I got this very cool cuff from Magic Industrie made from the spine of a vintage book. It’s hard to tell in the picture but the cuff is made from a copy of Ogden Nash’s Versus. Isn’t it great and it fit perfectly so it was meant to be.

After the craft fair I stopped off at Fair Bean for an iced coffee with toffee and nutella! Oh my, talk about yumminess. It’s been a good weekend and now I’ll leave you with a bit of poetry from Ogden Nash.

How pleasant to sit on the beach,
On the beach, on the sand, in the sun,
With ocean galore within reach,
And nothing at all to be done!
No letters to answer,
No bills to be burned,
No work to be shirked,
No cash to be earned,
It is pleasant to sit on the beach
With nothing at all to be done!

Excerpt from Pretty Halcyon Days.

So Ready

Who’s ready for the weekend? I know I am. I don’t really have big plans aside from catching up on some errands but one thing I really want to do is go to Renegade Craft Fair and support fellow indie crafters and artists. Perfect timing as it’s getting close to my birthday so I think I need to treat myself to some goodies don’t you think that’s a good idea?

On the reading front I am still very much enjoying the Maisie Dobbs book but just haven’t been able to read very much this week. I did go to my book group on Tuesday and that was a good time. I need to tell you more about the book but goodness I’m so behind on reviews that who knows when I’ll get to that.

Anyway, a short post because I’m ready to wind down for the evening. Have a wonderful weekend everyone and don’t forget that my Laura Lippman giveaway closes on Sunday so you’ve still got some time.

Decisions, Decisions

amongothers.jpgI was supposed to start reading Among Others by Jo Walton this weekend because Kailana and I are doing a readalong, and this also happens to be one of our choices for the Once Upon A Time Challenge, but I have the latest Maisie Dobbs just out from the library and I thought, oh I’ll just sneak in a couple of pages.

Right. A couple of pages turned into chapters and now Among Others has to wait a bit more. I have promised I’ll have Among Others finished by end of May so hopefully I won’t be sidetracked by other shiny new books.

alessoninsecrets.jpgIn the meantime, A Lesson In Secrets by Jacqueline Winspear is proving to be another wonderful entry in the Maisie Dobbs series. For this 8th book, Maisie is going undercover as a philosophy professor to help the British Secret Service monitor any activities “not in the interest of His Majesty’s government.”

I love these books in part because of the character, but also because I always feel like I learn a bit more of what life must have been in like in England during that time frame. Jacqueline Winspear adds details about the cars, the dress, all sorts of bits that really help make you feel like you’ve stepped into another world.

I think with historical fiction it must be hard for authors to balance how much detail to add. You don’t want to go over the top and bore your readers but at the same time you do want to create the right atmosphere. These books come across as very genuine to me. If you’ve never tried them you should.

So how about you, have you been tempted by any new books even when you had others in the queue? What did you start?
