More Packages

Well, not all the packages I’ve received lately are book packages but that’s because today is my birthday and my husband and friends have kept me busy unwrapping gifts. I’ve gotten a one of a kind art photo, pretty jewelry, gift certificates to Amazon and YogaYoga and best of all lots of good wishes and sweet cards.

So a very short post tonight friends because we’ve just had dinner and ice cream (rum raisin – yum) to celebrate and now I just want to relax. It’s been kind of a long week at work already and to think that I have to go to the office on Saturday – sigh. That’s ok, I’m actually taking a couple of days off next week.

Anyway, more bookish goodness tomorrow when I tell you about some of the ARCs I’ve received lately. Great new stuff on my shelves.

amongothers.jpg“I sat on the bench by the willows and ate my honey bun and read Triton. There are some awful things in the world, it’s true, but there are also some great books. When I grow up I would like to write something that someone could read sitting on a bench on a day that isn’t all that warm and they could sit reading it and totally forget where they were or what time it was so that they were more inside the book than inside their own head. I’d like to write like Delany or Heinlein or Le Guin.”

Among Others by Jo Walton

Remember how I said I put this book aside recently to get to another first? While I very much enjoyed my other book, I’m really taken in by this one. I wasn’t sure if I was really in the mood for a fantasy book but a few pages in and I’m so hooked.

The main character is a young girl who has run away from home. She lands on her father’s door, a man she’s never met and she’s promptly sent off to boarding school. She’s an outcast for various reasons at the school and there are many things that are slowly coming out the further I get in the story that allude to some dark moments in her life.

It’s no surprise that Morwenna finds refuge in books. She finds comfort in the worlds of science fiction and fantasy and in the fairies she sees around her.

While I may not be quite the fantasy and science fiction fan that Morwenna is, I can certainly relate to the joy of finding a new author to love, discovering a bookshop to explore and just being with books. I’m not very far into the story yet but I’m excited to see what else is in store.

Isn’t it fun to read about bookworms in books? That makes you feel like you can relate to the character doesn’t it?

Box of Books

It’s been a while since I ordered any new books but the other day I received an email from Borders about having some Borders Bucks and I thought, well, I can’t go to the stores anymore as we don’t have any here in Austin but I can place an order.

So I got The Return by Victoria Hislop which takes place during the Spanish Civil War and Eight White Nights by Andre Aciman which sounds like a quite wonderful love story. Has anyone read these?

I’m actually still waiting for another book, Cakes and Ale by W. Somerset Maugham as that’s the June reading selection for the Slaves of Golconda. I’ve only read Of Human Bondage by Maugham many years ago but I remember really liking that book a lot so I have high hopes for this one.

What else, oh yes, I finished A Lesson In Secrets by Jacqueline Winspear and I really enjoyed the latest Maisie book with one exception but I’ll go into that later when I write more about it. Of course the bummer is that now I have to wait a whole other year for another Maisie book.

Now it’s off to go read my new book. I’ll tell you more about it tomorrow.
