Invitation

invitationI wanted to post a review, but then I just wasn’t in the mood to  write one. I could tell you about my current reads but not much has changed since the last few times I’ve talked about them.

I didn’t really know what to talk about today. The weather? It’s still hot here in Texas. The weekend? Well no major plans except for lots of errands to run.  This week has been a bit crazy at work so I’m just not very inspired.

So what to write about? Well, let me go to my bookshelves and something should spark an interest. And, for some reason I thought why not a glance through my book Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein. It never fails to make me smile.

And, from the first page I ran across this “invitation” and I just thought what a perfect invitation this is for all book lovers.

If you are a dreamer, come in,
If you are a dreamer,  a wisher, a liar,
A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer…
If you’re a pretender, come sit by my fire
For we have some flax-golden tales to spin.
Come in!
Come in!

I hope you find lots of inviting stories this weekend. I know the pages of my books are calling me. Happy weekend everyone!

Mediterranean Noir

totalchaosIn Izzo’s novels, Marseilles is explosive, tragic, breathtakingly beautiful and deadly. Asked to explain the astounding success of his now legendary Marseilles trilogy, Izzo credits his beloved native city: “Essentially, I think I have been rewarded for having depicted the real beauty of Marseilles, its gusto, its passion for life, and the ability of its inhabitants to drink life down to the last drop.” (from the gatefold cover)

How does this sound to you? Makes you want to jump in and hold fast to your reading seat doesn’t it? I have four other books in progress and I don’t really want to start another book before finishing at least another of my books but I have no choice. I have to start Total Chaos by Jean-Claude Izzo.

Well aside from the fact that it does sound like a good story, this is my book selection for my reading group next week. Yes, I’ve done it again and waited too long to start my book. That’s ok, I’m looking forward to discovering a new author, finally reading some Mediterranean Noir. In case you don’t know this book is part of  the World Noir collection by Europa Editions.

So if you’ve read this let me know what you think. Have you read some Mediterranean Noir? What other books can you recommend?

Checking Out A Human

On my drive home today I heard this interesting story on NPR about how libraries are finding ways to be creative in the digital age. Some will lend you not just books but maybe a fishing pole and tackle and another library had the idea of checking out a human.

Instead of checking out a book to read about a subject you meet with an “expert” for 30 minutes or so. Isn’t that neat? There’s even an international HUMAN Library system. I’d never heard of this.

Anyway, of course to me a library is all about books but I know that libraries are changing and adjusting always to serve communities better. As a matter of fact I can’t wait to go to San Antonio later this year and see BiblioTech, the country’s first bookless public library!

Now all this talk about libraries makes me want to go visit mine but I’m actually on a library ban. My bookshelves are overflowing, vacation is coming, etc. so no more library books for the time being. So what do you think of all this library talk? Would you like to be “checked” out?
