A to Z

atozI’ve seen this A to Z survey going around the blogosphere and I finally got a chance to play.

Author(s) I’ve Read the Most Books From: Jacqueline Winspear and Peter Robinson are two that come to mind. I’m waiting for book 11 in the Maisie Dobbs series and I’m at book 13 in the Inspector Banks series but there are countless other series authors I love and follow so I could probably name quite a few more.
Best Sequel Ever: Not counting series books, I would say Pigs In Heaven by Barbara Kingsolver. This follows the story of Taylor and Turtle (excellent characters) from The Bean Trees.
Currently Reading: I have several on my nightstand but the one that I keep picking up is Dracula by Bram Stoker.
Drink of Choice While Reading: As long as it’s not before going to sleep then it’s coffee. Every once in a while I’ll do tea.
E-Reader or Physical Book?: Physical books. The only time my Kindle gets a work out is when we travel. Then it’s great to have so many books with me and my suitcases still have plenty of space for items to bring back home – mainly chocolate and more books!
Fictional Character You Probably Would Have Dated in High School: I think I spent way too long thinking about this one and still couldn’t come up with one character.
Glad You Gave This Book a Chance: The Book Thief. Aside from being an all time favorite book, I also credit this book with opening up the world of YA to me. I still don’t read many YA books but I don’t think they are just for kids any more. I’ve read some really great ones and am happy to have another genre to choose from in my reading choices.
Hidden Gem Book: The Enchanted April by Elizabeth Von Arnim. Such a feel good book.
Important Moment in Your Reading Life: Starting a book blog. I love being able to connect with so many bookworms all over the world. It’s so great to finally find lots of friends who want to talk about books!
Just Finished: Well, not such a recent finish but the last book was The Salinger Contract by Adam Langer
Kind of Books I Won’t Read: If the story or subject sounds interesting then I’m pretty open to trying any genre. However, self-help books are probably the ones at the bottom of my list.
Longest Book I’ve Read: I tend not to pick up chunky books often so all I can think of is Great Expectations which I actually just went and pulled off my shelf and it doesn’t look as daunting as some other books I’ve seen mentioned in this survey.
Major Book Hangover Because: I can’t remember a recent one but one that does stick in my mind is A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry. I was so disturbed by what the characters went through. I felt like I couldn’t pick up a book after that one.
Number of Bookcases I own:  Four of Billy bookcases from Ikea ones and a skinny one where I keep my crafty/artsy books and the one-of-a kind journals I’ve made. I’m running out of space though and have several book stacks on the floor.
One Book I have Read Multiple Times:  I don’t do re-reads but have read The Handmaid’s Tale and Love In the Time of Cholera twice.
Preferred Place to Read: Ideally it would be in a comfy chair in my studio/library but I had to move my chair out last year when I added more table space for my crafting. So while I wait to get a smaller comfy chair, most of my reading is done in bed.
Quote that Inspires You/Gives You All the Feels from a Book You’ve Read: “Those who are happy enough to have a taste for reading, need never be at a loss for amusement.”
Reading Regret:  I wish I had started keeping track of all the books I’ve read sooner. I’ve been keeping a list since 2002 and it’s really fun to go back and see what (if anything) in my reading habits has changed.
Series You Started and Need to Finish (all the books are out in the series):  I was going to say the Inspector Rebus series by Ian Rankin but I just realized he’s got another Rebus book out! I follow lots of series and the writers are still writing so this is a tough question.
Three of Your All-Time Favorite Books:  The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro, Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros and Chocolat by Joanne Harris. Ask me tomorrow and the list is probably totally different.
Unapologetic Fangirl For: Hmm, so many authors. I think right now I would say Rainbow Rowell. Loved Eleanor & Park and Attachments.
Very Excited for This Release More Than All the Others: Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy by Helen Fielding
X Marks the Spot (Start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book): The Good Husband by Gail Godwin. Sad to say that’s been sitting on my shelf for a while.
Your Latest Book Purchase: The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. Finally got it!
ZZZZ-snatcher Book (book that kept you up WAY too late): I can’t stay up late reading very much as sleep always wins but this past weekend I had a hard time putting Dracula away.

Hello October

September was a very good reading month but I’ve got vacation to thank for that. I read eight books and have four others in progress but now that I’m back to work and the daily routine my reading has considerably slowed down. I have great hopes of finishing the R.I.P. Challenge and getting through other books but realistically I just don’t know if that will happen.

I read every day but the time I have devoted to reading is not much. I feel like there is so much competing for my attention (I’m sure you all feel that way too). I’ve looked back at all the books I’ve read this year and if my reading continues like this for the rest of the year then it might be a year with the least amount of books read.

Yikes. I know, it’s not about the number of books but I can’t help but think that the book stacks are growing taller and my TBR list is out of control.

So instead of just writing on and on about how I haven’t been reading much, how about if I get back to my books in progress! I’ll tell you more about those soon as I’ve got some good ones on the nightstand.

Weekend Recap

I hope you all had a great weekend. One of the highlights of my weekend was going to my restorative yoga class. It was such a great class because right when we were starting to get settled and do some OMs, thunder was rumbling outside and rain was starting to fall. The room was all softly lit and it was just such a wonderful experience.

Other than yoga, I also did a bit of paper crafting, read and test rode a new bike! More on that soon.

librarybooksThe other thing was to renew my library card. I’ve mentioned that I’ve been on a library ban but well, once I walked through the doors there was no way I was going leave without browsing the shelves.

Here are the books I had to check out:

Claudia Silver to the Rescue by Kathy Ebel. From the dust jacket: Estranged from her bohemian Brooklyn family and fired for an impropriety at work, Claudia Silver is officially in over her head.

The Healer by Antti Tuomainen. This is a dystopian climate thriller which was selected Best Finnish crime novel of 2011. As much as I enjoy Scandinavian fiction I don’t often read books set in Finland so I’m excited about this one.

The Tale of Raw Head & Bloody Bones by  Jack Wolff. With a title and cover art like that and the R.I.P. challenge underway how could I resist?

I am Venus by Barbara Mujica. From the dust jacket: A historical novel that reimagines the dramatic life and loves of the Baroque Spanish painter Diego Velazquez.

Don’t these sound good? I have missed going to the library of course but every once in a while I go on bans so I will read more books from my shelves. Anyway, I’m looking forward to these so let me know if you’ve read any of these and what you thought.
