Currently Reading

currentlyreadingWhile I had to start a new book (Mansfield Park) in the New Year to celebrate a new reading year, I am actually in the middle of some interesting reads.

The first one is Evil and the Mask by Fuminori Nakamura. This thriller started off exactly as I was expecting, very creepy and disturbing but somewhere along the middle of the way I’ve lost some interest. The book is dark and maybe it’s my mood but I just want to be done with it. I’m reading this one for the Japanese Literature challenge which is drawing to a close this month.

Next up is The Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie. I’ve not read a Christie book in years and this one is a lot of fun. A murder of a socialite on a train headed towards to Nice. This is a case for Hercule Poirot to investigate. I have about 60 more pages and have my suspicions on whodunit but am not sure. This book goes towards the Vintage Mystery Bingo challenge.

My other read is The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen which I picked up when I was getting a bit too disturbed by Evil and the Mask. This Danish crime novel also has it’s own share of violence but there are at least a couple of characters I enjoy reading about. I’ll probably take me a while to finish this one.

Finally, the last book which I was sort of taking my time with is now taking precedence because it’s due back at the library on Saturday. The Woman Upstairs by Claire Messud I know has been talked about quite a bit in blogland and it seems people either loved it or hated it. While I may not like the main character very much I find her thought-provoking and I’m curious to see what is going to happen to her.

So those are my reads for the weekend. What about you?

Oh and by the way, did you see that Barnes & Noble has their classics on sale? Might have to add a few more to my shelf. Happy weekend everyone!

New Year, New Book

I hope you all had a great start to the New Year. We celebrated with our 12 grapes at midnight and hugs. Of course I always have to read a little bit before going to sleep so I thought a New Year, calls for a new book even if I’m currently between several books.

firstsI’m always talking about reading more classics so why not start the year off with one. My choice was Mansfield Park by Jane Austen. I have not gotten very far into the story and this is the one Austen book I know the least about but already I’m rooting for good things to happen to poor, little Fanny Price.

I’ll keep you posted on how my reading of this one goes but how about you, have you read this one? Where does it rank on your list of favorite Austen books?

Other than reading, I also enjoyed being outdoors for a bit when we went for a bike ride (with a pit stop at the coffee shop of course). Love days like this.

Now it’s back to reading!

Favorites & Year In Review

It’s that time of the year again, time to look back at my reading and see which books have made my favorites list. So here it goes:

My favorites of 2013 were:
Fiction: The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving by Jonathan Evison, The Unseen by Katherine Webb, Dracula by Bram Stoker and Good Kings Bad Kings by Susan Nussbaum.

Mystery: The Black House by Peter May, Dante’s Wood by Lynne Raimondo, and Total Chaos by Jean-Claude Izzo.

YA: Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Lowell

The numbers:
Total books read in 2013: 53
Books by women: 32
Books by men: 16
Books by several authors: 5
Fiction: 20
Mystery: 26
Young Adult: 1
Non-fiction: 1
Classic: 1
Graphic Novel: 1
Poetry Collection: 3
Books in translation: 9 (Danish, Finnish, French, German, Spanish, and Swedish)
Books from the library: 10
Kindle reads: 13
Challenges participated in: 4
Challenges completed: 2

While my total books read was lower than other years I am happy to see I did manage to incorporate some poetry books, books in translation and I even got in one classic. As always I wish there was more variety but there’s always next year right?

As far as my readolutions go, I am joining several challenges in 2014. There are authors who’ve been on my list to try for several years and I still keep putting their books back on the shelves so maybe this will be the year (some authors that come to mind are Nadine Gordimer, Jane Gardam, and Italo Calvino). As always I’m hopeful of reading more classics, more non-fiction and more poetry.

Most importantly, wherever my reading takes me I just hope to thoroughly enjoy it!

Thank you friends for sharing your reading life. I look forward to a lot of book talk with you in the New Year. May this year be filled with much health and happiness for you!

Hugs,
Iliana
