Goodies

I hope you have all enjoyed some good times with your family and friends this Holiday! We’ve been keeping things low-key here at Casa Bookgirl. Just enjoying time off, spending time together and relaxing. And, of course enjoying the goodies that I got this Christmas:

giftsA dear friend of mine gave me an adorable Pride & Prejudice tote from Out of Print. I can’t wait to take it with me on my next library outing. My husband totally surprised me with a subscription to Art Journaling magazine. I love that publication! And, if that wasn’t enough he also gave me 500 Handmade Books Vol. 2. I already have the first volume so this is a wonderful addition to my library. I have quite the shelf on books on bookbinding.

So I’d say it was a very nice Christmas haul!

I still have not put together my year end list of favorites but will be doing so very soon. I’ve actually had a bit of a hard time settling down with a book lately but finally found one that is really capturing my attention: The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen. I read the first book a couple of years ago and it’s great to revisit with Copenhagen Detective Carl Mørck.

I also wanted to put together some mini reviews but I get the feeling those are going to be postponed for a while longer. Anyway, more bookish talk soon!

Happy Holidays!

christmas1Dear Friends,

I hope you all have a beautiful time with your family and friends. We will enjoy a quiet Christmas and maybe even bake some cookies. Our recent pie baking attempts were such a success that I’m kind of getting into this baking thing!

I’m looking forward to some downtime, trips to the bookstore, movies, and just chilling out with books. Hope Santa brings you health and happiness (and lots of books!) this Holiday Season.

I’ll be taking some days away from the blog but I promise I’ll be back next week with my end of year favorites list! Can’t wait to read yours too!

Hugs,

iliana

Stocking Up

librarybooksMy library is going to be closed for a couple of days for the holidays and what do I do? Go check out books to make sure I have material to get me through the holiday closure. You would think I didn’t have piles of books to read already! Ha.

I may not go to the library all the time but I think I kind of freak out when I know it’s going to be closed. Do you do that?

Anyway here is my library loot:

  • Cold Killing by Luke Delaney. From Booklist: First-novelist Delaney, once a London homicide investigator, has blended the police procedural with the psychological thriller. The result is a tense, fast-paced, believable look at London policing, complete with many fascinating details.
  • Don’t Ever Get Old by Daniel Friedman. This is a mystery featuring a 87-year-old retired cop. This one is one for my book group meeting in January.
  • The Woman Upstairs by Claire Messud. I think this one seemed to be a big hit around the blogosphere. I’m really looking forward to this one and hope I can finish it before it has to go back.
  • Evil Eye; Four Novellas of Love Gone Wrong by Joyce Carol Oates. How many books has this author written? I swear it seems like there’s a new book by her all the time. I’ve really enjoyed some of her books so I think this one will be interesting.
  • Life After Life by Jill McCorkle. I tried to read this one earlier this year and had to return it before I finished it so I hope to get to it this time. I think I’m going to really enjoy this one.
  • Evil and the Mask by Fuminori Nakamura. I’ve started this book which is going to count for my Japanese Literature reading challenge and I have to say it’s creeping me out. I’m only about 30 pages in and am on the edge of my seat wondering what’s going to happen next.

What books have you checked out lately?
