Good Kings Bad Kings

goodkingsbadkings“My tía Nene said three is the magic number and when three things happen to you that are so, so bad and you feel like the whole wide world is just throwing up on your new shoes, don’t worry. Your bad luck is about to change. And, I am sitting inside a room that smells like a urinal toilet at a place called the Illinois Learning something something. It’s only my second day here and would you believe these people already got me in the punishing room? So this is three.”

Good Kings Bad Kings by Susan Nussbaum

That introduction begins Yessenia’s account of how she ended up at a nursing home for juveniles. She obviously doesn’t want to be there and what is heartbreaking is to see that she doesn’t really understand how she got there.

Each chapter is the voice of another teen living in this for-profit nursing home for teens with mental and physical disabilities. And, as a contrast we also get the stories from the viewpoint of the nursing home staff, whether they are management or care staff.

There is a lot of sadness in this story because you wonder how can people be so cruel or how can agencies only care for a buck and not the welfare of those who need the most help but there are some moments of joy. There are friendships and love stories that sustain the children and even the care staff.

What is so incredibly heartbreaking is to see how sometimes people are really trying their best and have good intentions but they are over-worked and underpaid and that can only lead to mistakes with grave consequences. Is there a glimmer of hope? Well, I think by raising awareness there is hope because we need people who can advocate for those who can’t advocate for themselves.

Having worked in a nursing home myself in the administrative side, I can tell you this felt very real. I didn’t work with youth but I saw the ugly side like illness and neglect all mixed in with simple joys. Working in healthcare is tough. I really loved this book and it was one of my favorites last year. It can be a hard read and the alternating narrators may take some time to get used to but I highly recommend this one and hope you’ll add it to your list.

Some New Books

janarcsAs I mentioned in my previous post I have some new Advance Review Copies that I’m excited about. I haven’t been requesting many books because honestly between my endless stacks and library books, I don’t know when I’ll read these but it is a nice surprise to get ARCs isn’t it?

The first one is I think I Am In Friend Love With You by Yumi Sakugawa. This slim little book is a graphic novel celebrating friendship.

Next up is Hotel Brasil by Frei Betto. Published by Bitter Lemon Press, this is a crime novel set in Rio de Janeiro. The only Brazilian writer I’ve read before is Paulo Coehlo and this sounds completely different from his style so I’m excited to read this book.

Then it’s Gretel and the Dark by Eliza Granville. Isn’t the cover great? I love the Fraktur font and think it was probably a good choice for a story set in 1899 Vienna. Psychoanalyst Josef Breuer is investigating the case of a girl who insists she is a machine.

Finally, Dreams Of the Golden Age by Carrie Vaughn. Is the story about a teen with a telepath for a father and superheroes for grandparents but Anna has secrets of her own. This is actually a sequel so I’m going to have to read After the Golden Age first.

Let me know if you’ve read some of these and what you thought! What about you, have you received an ARC you are excited about?

Weekend Recap

The weekend just flew by didn’t it? We had a great time hanging out with friends on Saturday for en evening of tapas and wine. Yum. I know I had said I wanted to get some bookbinding done this weekend and that didn’t exactly work out but sometimes that’s just the way it goes right?

I did manage to finish The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen which was a bit drawn-out at times but it certainly kept me on the edge of my seat for the last few chapters. I also have been meaning to tell you that I started reading The Last Letter From Your Lover by Jojo Moyes and it’s a good one. I don’t think I’ll love it as much as Me Before You but that’s ok.

Thanks to Sandy I figured out that Requiem Mass is the second book in the series but luckily my library has the first one so I put a hold on it. Of course that’s led me to add some other holds so I’ll probably have to drop in at the library later this week.

write2Last but not least did you guys see the Start 2014 Write letter/card exchange program that Kailana and the Estella Society put together? I used to write so many letters and had pen pals in various countries (I’ve mentioned before that this is how my husband and I met right?) but you know how it is. Life gets busy, things change, etc. and now I hardly ever send a letter. I’m excited about this and hope you’ll think about joining in too.

For now, I’m off to read some more from my current reads. I am going to be adding some new books to the current stack but I’ll tell you more about those in another post.

And, I’ve been meaning to tell you about some new ARCs that I’ve received so stay tuned! Hope everyone has a great week ahead.
