Two Pages Done

No, not two pages read, two art journal pages completed last week! My reading has been slow going so this title might not be far off of that either now that I think about it. Anyway, remember I recently showed you a two page spread that I started?

Here it is finished:

shineon2You can still see some of the washi tape peeking through underneath the paint. There is quite a bit of texture to this and I wish you could see all the bumps and ridges.

One of my favorite things about this is the image of the woman (sorry if it’s hard to see the details). I found the illustration in an old book and I did a tape transfer not sure if it would work but it totally did! I’ve done tape transfers with magazine pictures but not old paper. What is cool is that you can see through a bit of the image to the paint underneath. Love that.

I also used some shiny spray and a star stencil. You can really see the stars at a certain angle and then I ended up just spraying a bit more on the pages. Again, hard to see here but if you hold up the book you can totally see the shimmer. I wasn’t too happy with the lettering which I did with a stencil but that is something I am planning to work on.

In case you are wondering what the text says, it is a quote by Maya Angelou: “Precious jewel, you glow, you shine, reflecting all the good things in the world.” I like that don’t you?

So as I want to work on my lettering technique I glanced through, Creative Lettering edited by Jenny Doh, and am very tempted to get it. If you have a good book to recommend on fun lettering techniques let me know. Alright off, to start the next pages!

Flowers & Friends

What a mixed bag this past weekend was. I had the chance to see one of my oldest and dearest friends so that was wonderful. Unfortunately I was a bit under the weather Saturday so that wasn’t as great but I’m feeling better now. Too much excitement I think! Ha.

So unfortunately that also meant I didn’t get to check out the Austin International Poetry Festival. I so wanted to go. Oh well, now I’ll just have to look for another poetry reading.

One place we went to discover was the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. This place is so close to me but for some reason I’ve never visited. We had a wonderful time walking the trails, seeing the bluebonnets and admiring the other wildflowers. My husband and I are planning to go back next weekend when they have their annual plant sale and getting some new flowers for our garden.

In book news I started Arctic Chill by Arnaldur Indridasson for my mystery book group meeting next week. I have read all the books up to this one which I think is number five in the series. It’s good to visit with these characters.

I apologize for not visiting but will try to catch up soon. Hope you are all having a great start of the week!

Before the Blog

Some co-workers were talking about throwback Thursday posts on Facebook and I thought why not post about that here today as I’m not much of a Facebook user.

So before the blog here’s how I was recording my books read and books I wanted to read.

booknotesI have three of these journals and am getting a kick out of looking through the entries. I think the furthest back they go is to May 1996. Before these books I know I was keeping track in spiral notebook. I wonder what happened to it.

Anyway, here’s a fun entry. Under the “I” section I mention reading A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving in 1999. It was for my Borders book group and I mention that this is my second time reading it. I thought I had only read that book once! Oh man, so many books and years ago it’s hard to remember the details.

How about you, what did you do before having a book blog?

Update: I just realized I blogged about this back in 2007. Haha. Ok, I think that’s what happens when you’ve been blogging a very long time.
