Journaling In Progress

inspirationI hope you all had a great weekend! We had tons of rain so not wanting to be out and about, I did a bit of stuff around the house and I took naps. Yay, for naps.

While I didn’t do any crafty stuff this weekend, not unless you count clearing off one my craft tables, I wanted to go ahead and show you some journal pages in progress.

I figured this would be a great post for Trish’s Inspiration On Monday link-up.

So here is a look at a journal spread in progress.

One of the first things I usually do is put some gesso on the pages. Not only will this give you a nice white canvas but I finally learned that it is allows your paint to not soak into your pages right away. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIn this case I used a very light coat of gesso.

Next I used two stamps, basic backgrounds, from the Dylusions line, a stencil and a Distress ink pad in Weathered Wood.

So now I’ve covered all pages but then what? I decided I wanted to use some paint but not all over the pages so I used some tape to tape off sections I wanted to keep without paint and then I grabbed a couple of Americana paints and started spreading paint around with baby wipes. Americana paints are great and I don’t notice a lot of odor with them as some other of the craft acrylic paints so these are usually my favorites.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERABut back to the pages… You are probably thinking that tape doesn’t match but it was just to keep some areas free of paint. I used washi tape as that doesn’t stick very well and you can easily lift it up without damaging the paper.

Sorry about the lighting. I’m looking at my journal right now and that blue is not as bright. Anyway, once I was done with the painting part, and that was all dry, I pulled off the tape and the white areas where for my journaling. I liked that I can still see some of the original background peeking through. Even through the paint as I sheered that out quite a bit.

screenshot_02I typically don’t write too much in my art journals but this was a page about me thinking of what to do next. So I think the “pathways” these lines form express that.

For the writing, I used a black Micron pen in point 20mm. I wrote in all directions. Not really caring if I could read what I wrote or not.

This isn’t finished yet. I actually have added a bit more to it but I’m still not sure if it’s quite done. So I’ve been thinking on this for a couple of weeks and who knows maybe I’ll leave it as is. If it changes a lot I’ll come back and give you an update post.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed that. Would love to hear what you’ve been creating lately!

Book Memories

readitforwardSo I don’t know about you but I love to receive newsletters about books. You know I’m a big fan of Book Page and I also read RT Book Reviews regularly but I’m also signed up to receive newsletters from publishers to find out what’s new in books. One of my favorites is the Berkley Prime Crime even though they tend to feature a lot of cozies which I don’t necessarily reach for.

Anyway, I recently signed up for Read It Forward and this week they had a neat list of books for party animals so you can “live vicariously through some of the most epic feasts, adolescent ragers, and drug-fueled benders in literature.” So I don’t think that normally would have caught my attention but then I saw one book — The Pigman by Paul Zindel and I was taken back to my junior high school days.

I don’t remember anything about the novel now but I just remember how much I loved it then. Then of course I started thinking of other books I loved back then. Again, no memories really of the plots but the titles just took me back to those school days. Of sharing books with friends, reading way up past my bedtime and going to the library to hunt through the shelves in hopes of finding another book by a favorite author. Fun times.

So do you have book related newsletters you enjoy reading? Any you can recommend? I’d love to sign up for more.

New Books

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI know I keep mentioning that I’ve received some Advance Review Copies and in the meantime I’ve gotten even more. Oh my goodness, this is why I’m on a library ban!

Anyway, here is a look at the first pile of books:

The Given World by Marian Palaia. A sweeping portrait of post-Vietnam America seen through the eyes of a young woman searching for the courage to go home again. I haven’t read many books set in this timeframe so I think this could be very interesting.

Orhan’s Inheritance by Aline Ohanesian. Moving between the last years of the Ottoman Empire and the 1990s, Orhan’s Inheritance is a story of passionate love, unspeakable horrors, incredible resilience, and the hidden stories that haunt a family.

Let Me Die In His Footsteps by Lori Roy. Edgar Award–winner Lori Roy wrests from a Southern town the secrets of two families touched by an evil that has passed between generations.

Color Blind and Double Vision by Colby Marshall. Jenna Ramey is a forensic psychiatrist who has synesthesia and uses her condition to help her read people and situations to catch criminals.

Alice In Wonderland High by Rachel Shane. In this retelling of the classic story, Alice is eager to save the world and falls in with an eco-vigiliante group at school.<

The Stranger by Harlan Coben . He appears out of nowhere, perhaps in a bar, or a parking lot, or at the grocery store. His identity is unknown. His motives are unclear. His information is undeniable. Then he whispers a few words in your ear and disappears, leaving you picking up the pieces of your shattered world.

The Other Side of Midnight by Simone St. James. Glamorous medium Gloria Sutter made her fortune helping the bereaved contact loved ones killed during the Great War. Now she’s been murdered at one of her own séances, after leaving a message requesting the help of her former friend and sole rival, Ellie Winter.

A Scourge of Vipers by Bruce DeSilva. To solve Rhode Island’s budget crisis, the state’s colorful governor, Attila the Nun, wants to legalize sports gambling; but her plan has unexpected consequences.

Looks like I got a lot of good books to choose from. Have you picked up any of these or are any of these on your TBR list?
