Catching Up

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHello Friends – I didn’t quite mean to take a week off from the blog but you know how that goes. I did have a great time with my family last weekend. It had been a while since I had seen some of my cousins so I was really happy to have them here. This Sunday I spent a bit more time with my mom – hope you all had a great Mother’s day!

Now here we are another weekend over and getting ready for a busy week at work.

In book news, I’m still reading some of the same books I had mentioned in a recent blog post and I also added Murder On Amsterdam Avenue by Victoria Thompson to my reading pile. This is the 17th book in the Gaslight series. I almost can’t believe I’ve been following this series for that many books but I have. I just love the setting and the characters.

Speaking of this book, I’m getting close to finishing it so off to read. Hope you guys have a great start of the week and more bookish stuff soon.

May Day

bookstoredayIt’s time to do a recap of the past month and look forward to what the new month will bring. I had a pretty good April. I finished five books and of those there was a bit of variety. Non-fiction, mystery and one book in translation.

The books I finished were: This Is Mexico by Carol Merchasin, An Age of License by Lucy Knisley, The Gone Dead Train by Lisa Turner, And Only to Deceive by Tasha Alexander and The Heart Has Its Reasons by Maria Duenas. Some I liked better than others but overall very enjoyable reads.

With regards to my reading challenges I seem to have stalled. I am reading one book right now that will count towards two reading challenges but yeah, I need to remember about these when choosing my next reads.

I’m still on a library ban although I do have an audiobook out. I am tempted to visit the library because I still need to return some books (now overdue I’m sure!) but I want to hold out just a little bit longer. I just want to read a bit more from my stacks.

For books this month, I’m carrying over some books from April, all great reads, so I’ll tell you more about those in another post and I really would like to re-visit with a favorite mystery series so I may be adding a new book soon. I am way behind on posts on ARCs, book reviews, you name it.

For now though, I’m focusing on having fun this weekend. I have family in town so probably not a lot of reading will be done but definitely a lot of laughing. We all need that.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and don’t forget that May 2nd is Independent Bookstore Day so go out and visit your favorite Indie bookstore.

This Is Mexico

ThisIsMexico“I moved to San Miguel de Allende, a town in central Mexico, in 2006. Even before the overwhelming US press coverage of drug violence began, people wondered about that decision. I did not have work here; I was a lawyer and independent consultant on employment law training issues. I could have lived anywhere.”

This Is Mexico
By Carol M. Merchasin

In this book of essays Carol Merchasin shares her experiences as an expat in Mexico. She wasn’t fluent in Spanish, people thought she was being naive about the violence in Mexico and there were probably many more drawbacks but along with her husband they decided to go for it anyway.

Like many expats they had some distressing experiences, like when fireworks were going off as a Fiesta was getting underway only Carol and her husband thought it was gunfire. But those experiences are usually few and far between. Instead, most of their experiences will be about becoming part of a community, like when they are invited to the countless birthday and confirmation celebrations for the children of their employees and their families.

Becoming part of a community you have to learn to adapt and most importantly enjoy the experience. Sure there will be annoyances and things you aren’t use to or wish they were like back at home but to make the best of it you will have to go with the flow. I found that the author did just that. Sure there were things that she didn’t understand but most importantly I thought she was all about soaking up the experience.

Being that I lived in Monterrey, Mexico for some years and I still have family there, some of the anecdotes she shares I can relate to like the love of Telenovelas she finds that many people share. Mexican soap operas are really very popular. I have family members that watch these and I admit even I watch some with my mom too.

But there are some experiences that are probably found in smaller towns or towns in central and southern Mexico which unfortunately aren’t the same in a large city like Monterrey. For example Holy Week is very important in Mexico but the way she describes the celebration in San Miguel de Allende sounds beautiful but it’s not something I’m familiar with. It is these anecdotes I found myself enjoying the most.

For anyone who loves a good expatriate story or dreams about what it would be like to live in a foreign country, this book is for you. It will make you think about the things you might miss from your home country but it also lets you imagine the potential for all the adventures you may have.
