Borrowed Books

I hope you’ve all had a happy weekend (Happy 4th for those of you in the States!). Ours involved a lot of relaxing, a trail walk and of course preparing with a pre-weekend trip to the library. I don’t know what it is but every time the library is going to be closed for a holiday I act like I have to go get more books. Like I’m somehow going to run out of books to read. Ha.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOh and yes, I know I had talked about being on a library ban but those usually only last a couple of months. So I’m back to putting books on hold and checking out books. So these are the books from two recent library visits.

The three books on the bottom of the pile are graphic novels. I haven’t read but one graphic novel this year so when I saw a mention of these in a newsletter I get I thought it would be fun to check some of them out. Of course I put them on hold and they all came in at once.

I have The Nao of Brown by Glyn Dillon, Daytripper by Fabion Moon and Gabriel Ba and Shortcomings by Adrian Tomine. Have you read any of these?

The rest include The Complete Poetry by Maya Angelou, Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes, Hugo & Rose by Bridget Foley and Malice by Keigo Higashino. So poetry, fiction and crime. Gotta love the variety.

Not pictured because I left the book in my bedroom is Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King. That’s the one I’ve started reading as it’s for my mystery book group. It’s been ages since I’ve read a Stephen King book but just reading the first couple of chapters feels very familiar.

Let me know if you’ve read some of these and what you thought. I’m in the middle of a couple of books right now so I’ll tell you more about those soon. Hope you have a great week ahead!

Month In Review

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt’s time to wrap up another month. How do these fly by so quickly, right? Well, June was actually a pretty good reading month for me. I read five books and a couple of those even counted toward some of my reading challenges.

The first book I finished was Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozsi Adichie. Really enjoyed this book a lot. It may not be my favorite of hers, that still is Purple Hibiscus, but this just had a lot of territory to explore. This one also counted toward my Chunkster challenge as it was kind of a long one.

On the mystery front I read A Dangerous Place by Jacqueline Winspear. This is the 11th book in the Maisie Dobbs series. I have some mixed feelings about this one and probably those of you who’ve read the whole series can guess why. If you haven’t read this series but want to I would definitely encourage you to start with the first book. There is so much progression in the lives of the characters that you really don’t want to miss out on anything.

The other mystery book I read was Eeny Meeny by M.J. Arlidge. This was a pretty good thriller and I’d be interested to read more by this author.

My last two books also count toward some of my challenges. One is The Sacred River by Wendy Wallace. This is for my What’s In a Name reading challenge. And, The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells counts towards my Back to the Classics challenge. Both of these books I really enjoyed.

I wish I could say that I’ll get back to you with reviews but I’ve been trying to focus on some other areas in my life which need a bit of attention – like my health. I’ll try to get better about the blog/blogging though.  I also want to thank you guys for all the kind comments to my previous post. You guys rock.

So hope you have a wonderful weekend. I’m looking forward to the three day weekend and I just got some coupons for Barnes & Noble so I think I know where we’ll be going.

Life, Art & Blogging

Hey Friends – Just a little update on what’s been going on here at Casa Bookgirl. I have just been busy with work, family stuff, some crafting and all of that means my blogging mojo has been MIA.

My husband was in Germany for a week recently to be there for his mom as she had minor surgery. All went well and it was a quick trip for him but I missed not being able to go and of course I tend to worry about things so that was one thing.

I find that I’ve been spending more time with my mom as she’s been a bit down. Our family hasn’t been to visit us as much as they used to because of time constraints, etc. Hopefully with Summer upon us there will be a chance for more visits.

on-phoneAmidst all of this though I have had some fun times. Last week I went to Arlington for an Art Jouraling retreat! That was a blast. I feel like I haven’t really been into my crafting as much lately and this is just what I needed.

There were four classes in one day and they were taught by some mixed media artists whose work I’ve been following for years so needless to say, I was super excited.

I got to experiment with black gesso, soft body acryclic paints, and even drawing faces! I guess I should say sketching faces but that’s huge for me as I don’t draw but wish I did. I promise to show you some of my samples from class but that will be for another post.

On top of all of this you know what happened? My blog had a bloggiversary! I can’t believe I forgot about it last week but it’s been 11 years. These last few years my blogging sometimes has seemed to come to a stop but something always pulls me back in. So thank you guys for hanging in there with me. I love sharing my life with books with you. Speaking of books, there have been trips to the library, to the bookstore and ARCs so posts on those coming up. In the meantime, I hope you are having a great month!
