Book Bundle

My book packages have arrived! I’ve been on a bit of a buying spree as I had a B&N coupon and then I also found some books through BookOutlet. I have plenty of books on my shelf but I just couldn’t pass these up. Let me know what you think:

Dizzy In Your Eyes: Poems About Love by Pat Mora. I didn’t realize this was a YA poetry collection but I’m still excited about reading this. I’ve read a previous collection by this author and found it very moving so I’m looking forward to this.

Barefoot Dogs by Antonio Ruiz-Camacho. While I don’t typically choose short story collections I was very intrigued by this one because I got the chance to hear the author at the Texas Book Festival event this Fall.

How To Travel Without Seeing by Andres Neuman. This is another author I saw at the Texas Book Festival and I was excited about his book which came about after he was doing a whirlwind book tour traveling through Latin America. I think it will be quite interesting.

The Lost Daughter by Lucretia Grindle. A young woman studying in Italy disappears and her parents are left with a lot of questions about her. I have read a couple of Grindle’s books and found them like good comfort reads so I hope to enjoy this one too.

From the Charred Remains by Susanna Calkins. I read the first mystery in this series several years ago and of course have fallen very behind and couldn’t pass this one up.

Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes. I tried reading this book earlier this year and had to return to the library because I couldn’t finish it on time so no excuses now. Look forward to this even if I was finding a scary/uncomfortable read.

Journal It! by Jenny Doh. A book on journaling. You know I have to have it for my library.

Alright, I have got to get reading don’t you think? Hope you have a wonderful weekend. What are you up to?

On My Kindle

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI know yesterday I said I need to focus on my current reads but that’s hard to do when there are so many new books and all the lists for favorites of the year are coming out. Have you been keeping up with those lists? Today I spent a good amount of time browsing through NPR’s Book Concierge and of course I want to read a lot of those books now!

As usual I will have my favorites of the year but I tend to do a wrap up post pretty much at the end of December so stay tuned for that one.

In the meantime, I wanted to tell you about some of the new books I’ve added to my Kindle thanks to ARCs from NetGalley:

The Loving Husband by Christobel Kent. I have been a fan of some of this authors previous books so I’m excited about this one. This is a thriller about a murdered husband who turns out has a shadowy past.

Almost Missed You by Jessica Strawser. This one is about a perfect couple who go on vacation with their small child and of course before you know it, the wife is facing a nightmare. Family secrets abound in this thriller.

Our Short History by Lauren Grodstein. Story about parenthood, sacrifice and life itself. From more info I read about this one, it sounds pretty sad.

The Map That Leads to You by J.P. Monninger. A romantic novel that takes place in the tender time of a young woman’s life: Heather has graduated from college and is traveling around Europe with her two best friends.

Really excited about these but first to finish some books. Have you heard about any of these and what about you, have you received some new books lately?

December Reads

bookmessI hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Ours was cold and rainy and frankly, perfect for reading but somehow I didn’t do very much of it. What is up with me? Anyway, in my monthly wrap-up post last week I mentioned that I was going to be carrying over several books into December so I wanted to go over those and the other books I’ve added to the pile.

In progress are still: Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier, Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, Blue Horses by Mary Oliver and The Dead Will Tell by Linda Castillo. Unfortunately I’ve had to return The Dead Will Tell as that was an audiobook and I couldn’t re-check out because someone had a hold on it. I was really enjoying that one too.

Since that post I did add a few others and they are:

A Conspiracy of Faith by Jussi Adler-Olsen. This is the third book in the Department Q series featuring Detective Carl Morck. Really am enjoying this one but it’s long. My husband wants me to hurry up and finish this so we can watch the series.

Nights of Awe by Harri Nykanen. This is the first in another Scandinavian crime novel. This one is set in Helsinki and features Detective Ariel Kafka.

Leave Me by Gayle Forman. Of all my books I think this is the one that seems to be flying by. I still have a ways to go but it’s so easy to get caught up in the drama of a woman who’s facing a serious illness and all the life/family obligations she still has to deal with and all she wants is to have someone take care of her.

Normally, this would be more than enough books for me to have ongoing but I need to also read my book for mystery book group. Our December selection is The Alienist by Caleb Carr. I read this many years ago but unfortunately don’t remember much about it. All I want to know is why did we pick such a chunky book for this month’s read? Hmm, I may be doing a bit of skimming on this one.

So my goal is to not add any more new books to this stack until I finish off a couple. What about you, what are you reading this month?
