Catching Up

I hope you’ve all had a great weekend. I didn’t mean to take a bit of a break from the blog but last week was just a bit busy. I wish I could say I was doing a lot of reading, and I have been, but it hasn’t been the fun reading kind. More like just stuff about HR to keep up with my studies.

Anyway to catch up, did you guys see that the Classics Club Spin was #3? That means I get to read The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield. I think when I was busy making my list I forgot that this was a short story. So I’m going to try and read the other stories included in my copy. It’s not a very large book so I’m hoping I can read it by end of April.

What else, oh yes, I finished A Study In Death by Anna Lee Huber and absolutely loved this installment in the series. I’m pretty sure I have the next book already waiting for me so I’m excited about that. If you’ve thought about checking out this series I do recommend it but I would definitely read in order.

Speaking of mysteries we’ve started watching Fortitude and the first couple of episodes have sort of reminded me of Trapped (which I really liked). I’m not quite sold on this one just yet but I do like the scenery although I’m thinking we should have saved this for the summer when it’s super hot here. Oh we hit 91 degrees yesterday! Too hot, too soon.

So this week I have a lot more course material to read but hopefully I can sneak in some of my books and I have coupons for Half Price Books. Yay. After my last visit when I found those cool vintage books you know that’s one of the areas I’ll be exploring. Here’s to a great week ahead!

Classics Club, Spin 17

I hope you all had a great weekend. Did you watch the Oscars presentation? I haven’t even seen any of the nominated films but I definitely have a list of movies I need to catch up on now!

Anyway, let’s get into today’s post because it may be a long one. Thanks to Kay I found out about the Classics Club, Spin #17. I’ve been meaning to participate in this for a while now and as I haven’t picked up a classic novel yet from my stacks I thought this would be the perfect time to finally dive in and enjoy a challenge.

To play along you have to list 20 classics you want to read and list them before March 9th. On Friday, March 9th, they’ll post a number from 1 through 20. The challenge is to read whatever book falls under that number on your Spin List, by April 30, 2018.

I decided to add some variety to my classics. So there’s mystery, fiction and even a romance and even better, I have a copy of all of these on my shelves so I’m also meeting my goal to read more from my stacks. Here is my list:

  1. Evil Under the Sun by Agatha Christie, 1941
  2. Maigret and the Flemish Shop by George Simenon, 1932
  3. The Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield, 1922
  4. Strangers On a Train by Patricia Highsmith, 1950
  5. Cakes and Ale by Somerset Maugham, 1930
  6. Artists In Crime by Ngaio Marsh, 1938
  7. Lady Audley’s Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, 1862
  8. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, 1847
  9. The Grand Sophy by Georgette Heyer, 1950
  10. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, 1958
  11. Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh, 1945
  12. The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle, 1902
  13. The Quiet American by Graham Greene, 1955
  14. Washington Square by Henry James, 1880
  15. House of Mirth by Edith Wharton, 1905
  16. Eva Trout by Elizabeth Bowen, 1968
  17. Love in a Cold Climate by Nancy Mitford, 1949
  18. The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, 1948
  19. Indiana by George Sand, 1831
  20. Lady Susan by Jane Austen, 1871

I think most of these books have been on my shelves for years so whichever one ends up being the lucky one I’ll be happy to read it. Which book are you rooting for? Anyone else joining the Classics Spin?

Currently Reading

A new month begins and I’m currently in the middle of two really good reads.

I wanted to read a mystery and I wanted a comfort book so I thought this means I need to revisit with a favorite series. Going back to favorites means you are already acquainted with the characters and can easily sink into the story.

So I chose A Study in Death by Anna Lee Huber which is the fourth in the Lady Darby series. Lady Darby quickly finds herself investigating the death of woman whose portrait she had been commissioned to paint. Not only does she feel some guilt about what led to the woman’s death but she is also concerned about her sister’s health and her own upcoming wedding. Definitely a lot going on but I am thoroughly enjoying this book. If you’ve not checked out this mystery series I encourage you to give it a try but I would recommend starting with the first book.

My other read is Not That I Could Tell by Jessica Strawser. A group of women friends had an fun evening outdoors, chatting, drinking and enjoying some downtime but the next day one of them is missing and all wonder how well they knew their friend and all the others. I can already tell that this is one where I’m going to have doubts about all the characters and think everyone is hiding something.

Of course I’m thinking what else can I add to the mix. Granted then I take a look at all of my HR material I’m supposed to be reading and well maybe I just stick with these two for a while. What about you, what are you reading to kick off this month?

Happy weekend everyone!
