Month in Review

If you had asked me last week about my reading month, I would have said I’m skipping this wrap up because I’ve not finished any books! Luckily I was able to devote some time to my reads and finished up some books.

The books I read were: The Sunset Years of Agnes Sharp by Leonie Swann; translated by Amy Bojang, The Spite House by Johnny Compton and Recipes for Love & Murder by Sally Andrew.

All three were enjoyable reads and The Spite House was my first R.I.P. read. As usual I’m carrying over several reads.

While I haven’t been in a reading slump, I’ve just been finding it a bit hard to focus this month. I think it’s because usually the last months of the year are always busy at work so I have to focus on planning those. Plus, I have and some personal projects I want to work on and I have a crafty workshop coming up in October. Yay.

So any of you have plans to take action Banned Book Week? While I’m not currently reading any banned books, there are many on these lists that I have throughly enjoyed and can’t imagine someone not being able to have the opportunity to read.

Hope you have a great rest of the weekend! I’m hoping to catch up on some reading this Sunday.

Translated Fiction

So far this year I haven’t read as many books in translation as I’d like. I typically have a reading goal of at least 10 books in translation a year and to date I’ve only read five, but there’s still time. While my shelves have quite a few books in translation I can’t help but take note of new releases and/or upcoming releases so I thought I’d share some of the titles that have caught my attention:

A Little Luck by Claudia Piñeiro; translated from the Spanish by Frances Riddle. 20 years after a shocking accident, Mary Lohan returns to the Buenos Aires suburb she escaped in a fugue of guilt and isolation but she is not the same. I have really enjoyed several of this author’s previous novels so I’m very excited about this one.

The Color of the Sky is the Shape of the Heart by Chesil; translated from the Japanese by Takami Nieda. Seventeen-year-old Ginny recounts her adolescence growing up Zainichi, an ethnic Korean born in Japan, and the incident that forced her to leave years prior.

Upcoming:
The Simple Art of Killing a Woman by Patrícia Melo; translated from the Portuguese by Sophie Lewis. A young lawyer goes to a town near the Amazon and finds that crimes against women are just the tip of the iceberg of the problems that surround the community.

The Book Censor’s Library by Bothayna Al-Essa; translated from the Arabic by Tanya Abdelrahman and Sawad Hussain. A warning call and a love letter to stories and the delicious act of losing oneself in them.

The Bridesmaid by Savyon Liebrecht; translated from the Hebrew by Gilah Kahn-Hoffmann. The gripping story of a reunion between two family members that brings back a long-forgotten past and reveals secrets that will change their lives forever.

Let me know if you’ve read any of these authors or if some of these books sound good to you too!

Sunday Salon

Happy Sunday everyone! It’s time to catch up on what’s been going on around here lately.  Thank you to Deb at Readerbuzz for hosting the chat.

What I’m reading: I saw this book at a recent bookstore visit and couldn’t pass it up, Vampires of el Norte by Isabel Cañas. I just started it recently and it’s so atmospheric. As I started it I was reminded of the stories my Abuelita used to tell me when I was a kid.

What I’m watching: We just started watching Dark Winds and we’re totally hooked. I haven’t read any of the Tony Hillerman books featuring Detective Leaphorn & Chee, which is what the show is based on, but now I think I need to get my hands on those too. I actually saw these books a lot on my recent trip to New Mexico.

What I’m savoring: Envy apples. Where have I been? I do love apples but usually eat other varieties but I recently discovered these and they are now my favorites. I need to try some of the salad recipes although once the weather cools down I’m all about soup!

What’s on my craft table: Vintage magazines. I know I’m always talking about new magazines I’m reading but when I want to craft I turn to some vintage magazines to pull out images for collage or for my journal spreads. I love stickers and all types of new craft supplies but using vintage items really make things your own and I like the mix of old and new.

What made me smile: I got to spend time with one of my best friends this weekend. We’ve been friends since Junior year in high school so we always have lots of stuff to talk about.

What is my quote for the week: “Give me juicy autumnal fruit, ripe and red from the orchard.” ~Walt Whitman

I hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend and have a great week ahead!
