Weekend Recap

Wow, you guys, we can breathe a sigh of relief after Saturday’s election news! Is everything going to be great all of a sudden? Of course not but I am hopeful that we can take some actions to make things right on so many things. I just read a headline today about US COVID-19 nearing 10 million cases. That is just depressing and with major holidays coming up I don’t even want to imagine what the numbers will look like by the end of the year.

Anyway, the past week was super busy with work and with the tension of watching the election and stuff, I felt like I couldn’t relax so this weekend, I made up for that for sure. My husband and I watched several interesting shows but one was The Social Dilema. I don’t think it’s surprising in some ways but what I found interesting was how there wasn’t much thought to the consequences of some of these interfaces. At the beginning it all started on keeping people connected and sharing cool stuff but obviously this has morphed into ways of keeping people distracted and misinformed. It was interesting.

I don’t think I told you but last weekend we made a very quick stop at Barnes & Noble and I didn’t even look at any books. Crazy, I know. But I was focused on finding magazines and I did find the latest issue of Flow. I love this magazine because it is all about creativity, taking things slow and enjoying the simple things in life. Again, I was super busy last week so I didn’t have a chance to check it out but I have been spending time with it this weekend. It is a pricey publication but I think it’s definitely well-worth it and I do cut up mine and use some of the articles for my journals or collaging.

Alright friends, I’ve got a busy day again tomorrow at work so now off to get ready for bed. Hope you have a great start to the week.

Happiness Is…

I think it’s fair to say that right now things are kind of tense over this election right? Hopefully we’ll see a good outcome but I thought a post to focus on happiness was in order. Here’s what I’ve been delighting in recently.

I’m still very much a coffee drinker but when temperatures get cooler I really enjoy tea. So in the afternoons when I feel like I need a treat I’ve been savoring this decaf tea.

You’ve heard me complaining enough about not being able to travel this year but we have found the Planet Earth DVDs to be amazing. There is so much beauty in this world isn’t there? We really need to take better care of it.

I have finally discovered that I enjoy listening to podcasts late at night on the weekend when I’m hanging out at my craft table. My favorites so far are Novel Pairings, Lore, and Read or Dead. Let me know if you have some favorites.

Letters from friends. Jenclair always delights me with her lovely mail art and letters and Isabel always sends me little care packages of goodies and a lovely letter. I appreciate them so much! If you don’t write letters, think about doing so. It’s a wonderful way to just put the world aside for a minute and focus on on connecting with someone else. And, I found this great little shop that has a zine on letter writing in case you need some inspiration.

And, if you are still not sure about the wonders of letter writing, you’ve heard my story right? My husband and I were pen pals first. He lived in Germany and I lived in Dallas, TX. We just celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary this week. You know I had to post a picture of us traveling somewhere. Here we were in Iceland in 2009.

Would love to hear what is bringing you joy lately. I hope you find some peaceful moments this weekend and more book talk soon.

Nonfiction November: Week 1

I’m excited to join in for Nonfiction November again. I missed this reading event last year but it’s such a great way for me to remember not to miss out on other reads.

There are link ups each week where you can share a post based on the prompts provided. I don’t know that I’ll be able to participate in all but I’ll try. More than anything I just want to make sure I’m reading some nonfiction. So here goes the first prompt:

Your Year in Nonfiction (Leann of Shelf Aware): Take a look back at your year of nonfiction and reflect on the following questions – What was your favorite nonfiction read of the year? Do you have a particular topic you’ve been attracted to more this year? What nonfiction book have you recommended the most? What are you hoping to get out of participating in Nonfiction November?

This is pretty easy to answer. So far this year I’ve only read one graphic memoir, Good Talk by Mira Jacob. I do know I found it very good not just with due to the mix of illustrations and photographs but for the way the author explores issues of race and belonging in America. Unfortunately I read this book right as we were becoming aware that we were in a pandemic and I am finding it hard to remember much about this book.

I’ve already checked out several eBooks from the library and I’m very excited about these:
The Witches are Coming by Lindy West. A cultural critique.
Five Days Gone by Laura Cumming. In the fall of 1929, when Laura Cumming’s mother was three years old, she was kidnapped from a beach on the Lincolnshire coast of England (started this one last night).
Heart Berries by Terese Marie Mailhot. A powerful, poetic memoir of an Indigenous woman’s coming of age on the Seabird Island Band in the Pacific Northwest.

Thank you to the reading team of Katie at Doing Dewey, Julz of Julz Reads, Rennie of What’s Nonfiction, and Leann of Shelf Aware for hosting this reading event.

Let me know if you’re going to be participating in this or if you have some nonfiction reads to recommend.
