I got a little book package today from Open Letter Books, which by the way is still running a 40% off promotion for Women in Translation month. One other book is on backorder so I’ll tell you about it when it arrives.
I picked up Bluebeard’s First Wife by Ha Seong-nan, translated by Janet Hong. This is a collection of stories. Per the blurb, Ha’s paranoia-inducing, heart-quickening stories will have you reconsidering your own neighbors. I’m typically not big into short stories but this year I’ve had some great luck with them.
The other book is Garden by the Sea by Mercè Rodoreda, translated by Martha Tennent and Maruxa Relaño. Set in 1920s Spain, the novel takes place over six summers at a villa by the sea inhabited by a young couple and their beautiful, rich, joyous friends.
I wish I could have kept up more with my blog posts for this event but I have to say I’ve been reading some great books for Women in Translation month. August may almost be over but you still have some time to add some translated fiction to your reading stacks.

In the meantime I’m hoping to finish A Girl Returned by Donatella Di Pietrantonio, translated by Ann Goldstein. I love this book! I hope you are enjoying a weekend filled with great reads.
Oh my goodness, I love the sound of both of these. I noticed them on IG and glad I saw the blog post with even more detail. Hope you have a good weekend Ilianna.
You’ve done a great job with this challenge, and I’m looking forward to your reviews. Bluebeard’s First Wife sounds like an interesting collection!
Diane – They do sound good don’t they? I haven’t read anything by these authors either so I’m really excited to check them out. Hope you are having a great weekend too!
Jen Mullen – I actually just finished another book for WIT month. I can’t believe I’ve been so dedicated – usually I start all excited and sort of fizzle out. Hope you are doing well. I didn’t realize Hurricane Ida had gotten so strong. Praying for everyone in it’s way!
These both look wonderful. I’m so glad to hear you’re loving A Girl Returned… it’a waiting on my kindle.
