Guess what? I got a chance to spend some time with my Abuelita* this weekend! I hadn’t been able to see her in some time and I was thrilled to get a big hug from her and just share stories, laughter and even a few tears. I talk with her on the phone but it’s not the same as being together.
So, please excuse my absence from Blogland. I have fallen behind in visiting, answering comments, emails, you name it but I plan to catch up this week.
I also fell a bit behind on my reading although I did finish the very wonderful book, One Day by David Nicholls, which almost made me cry. Have you read it? You should.
Tonight, if I can manage to stay up a bit later then I may just dip into The Transit of Venus by Shirley Hazzard which the Slaves of Golconda will be discussing next week.
More bookish stuff soon.

That’s wonderful that you got to spend some time with your Abuelita, Iliana! 🙂
I’ve heard so many good things about “One Day”! I need to move that up on my TBR pile!!
That sounds like a great way to spend the weekend. 🙂
I received Among Others in the mail today. Once you are organized get in touch and we will figure out a reading plan.
How lucky you are to still have a living grandmother!! So great that you got to spend some time with her. I haven’t read One Day and won’t get to it for a while, so I’m thrilled to hear you’ve read it and loved it. I found mine in the library sale and didn’t realize what a lucky find it was till I got home. Have fun reading The Transit of Venus! Shirley Hazzard is an author I need to get around to reading – haven’t done so, yet, but I’ve heard wonderful things about Transit and The Great Fire.
One Day made me a wreck! Loved it – and I can’t wait for the film.
Have a great time!
I haven’t read One Day, but I do have the book here in my home so I really should pick it up!
Spending time with Abuelita is much more important that blogland. Hope you got to start Transit of Venus. I finished it the other day and loved it.
That is wonderful that you got to visit and spend time with your grandmother!
Glad you were able to spend time with your abuela! It sounds like fun. Does she live in Mexico? If so, it’s nice that you live close enough to travel there. I’m enjoying the Hazzard book as well–I’m not moving very quickly in it, but it is very compelling reading in any case!
Melody – It had been a year and a half! Way too long but a lot of things had gotten in the way of seeing her… My health last year, her health, etc. So this was wonderful. Oh and do move up One Day on your pile 🙂
Kailana – yay! Glad you got that and I’ll try to get back to you later this week(end) and we can plan on when to do our readalong. How fun!
Bookfool, aka Nancy – I’m so lucky. I never got the chance to know my other grandparents but her, she’s been there throughout my life so I am blessed. She’s 98!
Carrie K. – I was a bit distracted because of some other stuff as I was reading the end. I should have given it all my attention because I’m sure I would have been a big mess afterwards too. So good. I didn’t even realize it was going to be a film but have just found out that Anne Hathaway is starring in the picture. Not sure how I feel about that. I like her but kind of wish it had been someone else…. say emily blunt maybe!
Coffee and a Book Chick – Oh I hope you do. It’s really such a good story. Funny, sad, and just easy to relate to.
Stefanie – Indeed right? 🙂 I haven’t gotten to Transit of Venus yet. Have been a bit tired from the weekend but will start it this weekend – given that we have a few more days I hope I can finish it in time.
Kathleen – She used to come stay with us a lot but it’s so hard for her to travel now so I miss not having her near me. It was a great day.
Danielle – She does live in Mexico – Monterrey actually. Unfortunately with all the horrible violence we hadn’t been able to go as we drive to Mexico since my mom refuses to fly. It just seems so dangerous now to go by ourselves by car. My abuelita was in Laredo so that made it easier for us to go down there.
Hope you’re doing well, Iliana. It’s always wonderful to connect with a loved one, even if it has to be via the telephone. Glad you were able to do so–I can tell it meant a lot to you!
Enjoy the reading and don’t worry about the absence. We all go through our blogging ebbs and flows. Enjoy the rest of your week!
