I’ve been busy this week getting ready for our annual trip to Germany and it’s been a bit of a scramble as we have to plan for being out of the country for three weeks but I’m not complaining. I can’t wait to be in Germany again.
One of the most important parts of travel planning is which books to take right? In the suitcase and on the flight of course. I used to do quite a bit of book shopping overseas but won’t be able to indulge as much this year so I have to take quite a few books with me. That means, paperbacks only and if they are the mass market size even better.
I’ve got some classics in mind (think Persuasion and The Woman in White), some mysteries, some fiction and maybe I’ll even throw in an issue of Tin House or some other lit mag.
I’ll miss my bookshelves but I actually did do a bit of book shopping on Amazon.de and so I should have some books waiting for me over at my in-laws. I’ll tell you about those later.
For now, it’s back to packing and organizing.
I’m so envious, Iliana! 🙂
I’m always at a loss on what books to bring for my vacations because I don’t want to add burden to my lugguage but I also worry I didn’t bring enough books to last me for the trip, haha.
Hope you’ve a great time in Germany! Take lots of pics!! 😉
I must have told you before about my friend who buys all her holiday reads from the local charity shop and then cuts off the covers before she travels so that she take more with her. I really don’t think I could do that. Have a good holiday.
I love planning what books to take with me too, so much fun! Good luck resisting the bookshops in Europe! 🙂 Have a great time!
I always miss my bookshelves when we travel too – I always wish we could pack them up and take them all with us!! I will be travelling to the UK in a month so I will be looking out for ideas for books to take from you.
What a great idea to have books delivered to your destination! Takes a lot of stress off the decisions concerning the books you actually carry with you.
Have a great trip!
There is just something special about reading mysteries while traveling. I don’t know what it is, but I tend to very unconsciously take mysteries with me when we have our annual anniversary trip. I hope you have a wonderful time in Germany and that your book companions make the journey even more special.
Good luck! That is always such a tough decision. Sounds like you have made some good picks!
Have a great time in Germany. Sounds like fun. I had no idea your inlaws were German! That must be fun. Do you speak German?
Sounds like you have all of your reading planned out.
Vacation.Three weeks. Another country. Can I go in your suitcase?
This is where the Kindle is W O N D E R F U L! I have a whole library at my fingertips and it takes up hardly any space at all.
Melody – I’ve been counting down to vacation. I so need it! I’m very lucky that I can leave stuff behind at my in-law’s too so actually that always saves me a bit of room in my suitcase – for more books of course 🙂
Table Talk – Oh wow, I can’t imagine doing that either but well at least it works for her and she can take more books!
Joanna – It is so hard to resist the shops! I have a couple of favorites in some of the cities we’ll be traveling too but I just have to remember that a Euro is quite a bit more than a dollar! haha…
Karen – Oh so you are just about to get into planning mode right? It’s so hard because you always think you’ll want a book you left behind!
jenclair – Exactly! Plus, the books I found were super cheap (they are used) so it was great!
Carl V. – Thank you! And, yes, I love to read mysteries when traveling too. I always try to take books from a new to me series so that makes it even more fun!
Tiffany – Thank you. I think I’ve finally narrowed down the choices – just hope they’ll fit in the bags! haha…
Serena (Savvy Verse & Wit) – My German is very basic. I can understand quite a bit though so at least I don’t get too lost in the conversations! haha… It’s always fun to sit with my mother-in-law and watch t.v. especially if it’s American t.v. shows like Friends for example. At least I know what’s going on to begin with 🙂
Nancy – Come on over! 🙂 This is exactly why I would love to have a Kindle but I’m having to wait on that one until I have a job. Bleh. Oh well, maybe next year!
That is exciting! Come back loaded with pictures please! Definitely the Kindle is the way to go on long trips. That is something to look forward to!
Oh dear. I love Germany. Have fun and take lots of pictures!
That is a great idea. Over the last 2 years I’ve done that with authors I hadn’t read before (not necessarily series) and it did add to the fun, knowing I had no idea what to expect from that author. In both cases I was very, very pleased.
Enjoy your trip to Germany. I was in Cologne at the end of May and loved it. I was there for work so didn’t get to read much other than on the long flights over! I can’t wait to hear what you read while you are gone and what books you acquire while you are away.
I hope you have a fabulous trip, Iliana! I remember your pictures from last year – they were lovely. Planning which books to take is indeed one of the best parts 😀
I miss my bookshelves and book bloggers when I travel now. I hope you’ll be reading a lot of great books while you’re having fun in Germany. I’m so excited for me!!
We might be reading The Woman in White together but half the world away! I’m planning to read it when I head down to Palm Springs two weeks from now. 🙂
wow, a trip to Germany, how exciting!! have a safe and fun trip 🙂
I didn’t realize that you go every summer; how fun to look forward to this each year!
Smart to order books to have waiting for you!
Enjoy your trip …
Sandy – I promise! And, yea, I totally need a Kindle! haha…
aka Nik – Me too. I’ve been to Germany 10 times now I guess and each time I fall in love a bit more. I’d love to live there one day.
Carl V. – It’s great when it works out and we discover a new author to love right? I decided to take a Peter Robinson book – love his series – and I’m debating on another mystery. Oh time is running out 🙂
Kathleen – I’ve not been to Cologne yet but would love to visit. It looks beautiful. My in-laws live in the lower saxony area but we do take trips around so I’ve gotten to know quite a few parts in Germany.
Nymeth – Thank you! I think I posted some of the pics from our trip to the Harz. This year I don’t think we’ll get to go there but we are planning to be in Berlin for a few days so that’s ok then. I love Berlin!
Matthew – Oh too funny. I’ll be thinking of you then when I open my book! I hope you have a fun time in Palm Springs and I’ll be looking forward to your pics!
bookworm – Thank you so much! 🙂
Dawn – She is Too Fond of Books – I’m pretty lucky in that! And, yes, especially as we usually go in the Summer and that means we get to escape the Texas heat! haha…
Iliana….I hope you have an awesome time. Germany is one place abroad that I have never visited, even though I am German. I must get there someday. My ex-husband went there and fell in love…with the country. LOL
That’s how I feel in Portugal visiting my father’s side of the family. I have a very basic understanding of the language and American TV is one bonding experience
You’ll have lots of plan time for reading–Woman in White would be a great choice. I’m sure you’ll have picked lots of good reads!
